The length at first maturity (Lm50. ) and the maturity ogive are very important parameters in stock assessment. In this paper the ling Genypterus blacodes females Lm50. is estimated with frequencies of mature fish determined by microscope diagnosis of ovaries collected during the spawning season (SW Atlantic). The Lm50. of ling was estimated at 70.5 cm of total length (TL), which corresponds to an age of 4.5 years. The maturity process occurs between 63 and 78 cm TL (between 3.7 and 5.4 years). This is the first report of a longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus)nursery ground. The results of more than ten research cruises conducted since 1990 in the southern patagonian shelf are presented in this study. The nursery ground (52°S to 55°30'S)was detected by the presence of larvae between 5.60 to 12.80 mm of standard length in November and December in that area, with depth ranging from 90 to 160 m. Distribution and abundance of eggs, larvae and prerecruit stages of Merluccius hubbsi were evaluated to examine spawning, nursery and settlement areas in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone during the 1999-2001 period. Larvae and prerecruit stages were more abundant at stations from 50 m to 100 m depth. The nursery area would extend from the 50 m isobath south of 37° S to the 200 m isobath northward where the shelf becomes narrower. In the whole sampling area small size prerecruits were caught; therefore, the whole zone should be considered as a potential settlement area. This paper reviews the information on pelagic and demersal fish eggs and larvae, describing the distribution and seasonality of different species and their arrangement in icthyoplankton assemblages in the Southern patagonian waters. It also reports on 11 surveys conducted by INIDEP during 1992-1995. A total of 488 ichthyoplankton samples were analyzed. Fish eggs have been recognized in 47. of all ichthyoplankton samples. They belong to three species: Coelorhynchus fasciatus, Macrourus whitsoni and Micromesistius australis. Fish larvae of 23 species and 17 families have been identified in 96. of all samples analyzed.
