Phylogenetic placement of Tritirachium strains from the URM culture collection originally founded by Augusto Chaves Batista (1916-1967) in Brazil, and the description of T. batistae sp. nov. Acta Botanica
Bezerra,Jadson Diogo Pereira; Felipe,Maria Tamara de Caldas; Paiva,Laura Mesquita; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia; Silva-Nogueira,Eliane Barbosa da; Silva,Gladstone Alves da; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria de.
ABSTRACT Twenty-seven Tritirachium strains were present in the URM culture collection originally founded in Brazil by Augusto Chaves Batista. Fifteen freshly-prepared cultures were obtained from these original strains preserved under mineral oil. DNA was extracted for analysing phylogenetic relationships using the sequence information available from Tritirachium type materials and reference strains. Phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA sequences revealed that eight of these strains belong to the same clade as of T. oryzae and that the four other strains belong to the same clade as of T. candoliense. The strain URM 38, which was previously identified as “T. brumptii”, appeared to exist as a single lineage, related...

An unusual case of paracoccidioidomycosis in Brazil BJM
Macêdo,Danielle Patrícia Cerqueira; Neves,Rejane Pereira; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia; Lacerda Filho,Armando Marsden.
This paper reports an unusual case of paracoccidioidomycosis with ulcerations in the head and nose in a Brazilian man. For diagnosis, direct microscopic examination of ulcer secretion and skin samples treated with potassium hydroxide was performed. The isolation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis occurred at 28ºC and 37ºC on Sabouraud agar with chloranphenicol. Diagnosis was established by the presence of isolated and multiple budding yeast-like cells and typical fungus growth of P. brasiliensis.

Fusarium lateritium (NEES) as an agent of fungemia in a patient infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) BJM
Cambuim,Idalina Inês Fonsêca Nogueira; Neves,Rejane Pereira; Queiroz,Lusinete Aciole de; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia; Lima,Débora Maria Massa.
Emerging fungal pathogens are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the immunocompromised host. The association of fungi from the Fusarium genus with human infection in uncommon. The objective of this paper is to report the first case of fungaemia caused by Fusarium lateritium in a 42-year-old HIV-infected patient.

Identification and pathogenicity of Malassezia species isolated from human healthy skin and with macules BJM
Neves,Rejane Pereira; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia; Silva,Merivânia Lucas da; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria de; Queiroz,Lusinete Aciole de.
This study investigated the ocurrence of Malassezia species in clinically healthy students and with macules with a slight fawn discoloration and characterized the isolates as to the pathogenicity factors such as growth at 37ºC, lipase, phospholipase and protease detection. Clinical samples were collected from different body sites of one hundred students of different ages and both sexes. The samples, obtained by scrapping the skin surface and the scalp, were treated with potassa and cultured. Cultures were obtained in Petri dishes containing Sabouraud agar medium added of olive oil, incubated at room temperature and at 37ºC. Culture identifications were based in their morphological and physiological properties. Lipase, phospholipase and protease detection...

Trichosporon pullulans (Lidner) Diddens & Lodder isolated from the oral cavity of AIDS patient BJM
Neves,Rejane Pereira; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora de Queiroz; Chaves,Guilherme Maranhão; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia.
Trichosporon has been reported as a remarkable emerging pathogen and usually occurs in imunodrepressed patients. An oropharyngeal secretion sample was collected from a patient with AIDS, at the Sector of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Osvaldo Cruz University Hospital, Pernambuco State, Brazil. No yeast cells or arthroconidia were observed in the direct exam, but a culture was positive for Trichosporon pullulans, which is being reported in an AIDS patient for the first time.

Elastin increases biofilm and extracellular matrix production of Aspergillus fumigatus BJM
Brandão,Ildnay de Souza Lima; Oliveira-Moraes,Heloiza Maria da Silva; Motta,Cristina Maria de Souza; Oliveira,Neiva Tinti de; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia.
Abstract Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic saprobe fungus that accounts for 90% of cases of pulmonary aspergillosis in immunosuppressed patients and is known for its angiotropism. When it reaches the respiratory tract, A. fumigatus interacts with structural components and blood vessels of the lungs, such as elastin. To understand the effect of this structural component, we examined the effect of elastin on the production and development of the biofilm of A. fumigatus. In RPMI containing 10 mg/mL of elastin, a significant increase (absorbance p < 0.0001; dry weight p < 0.0001) in the production of biofilm was observed in comparison to when RPMI was used alone, reaching a maximum growth of 18.8 mg (dry weight) of biofilm in 72 h. In addition,...

Pathogenic aspects of Epidermophyton floccosum langeron et milochevitch as possible aethiological agent of Tinea capits BJM
Macêdo,Danielle Patrícia Cerqueira; Neves,Rejane Pereira; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria de; Queiroz,Lusinete Aciole de.
The aim of this research was to verify the ability of 15 isolates of Epidermophyton floccosum to perforate hair in vitro and characterize them for pathogenicity factors such as growth at 37ºC and proteinase and phospholipase production. Fourteen isolates perforated hair and from these twelve produced perforating organs. All isolates grew at 37ºC and produced proteinase, but not phospholipase. These results suggest that E. floccosum may be a possible aethiological agent of tinea capitis.
