Genetic improvement and population structure of the Nelore breed in Northern Brazil PAB
Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Martins Filho,Raimundo; Bozzi,Riccardo; Ladle,Richard James.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the population structure and the genetic and phenotypic progress of Nelore cattle in Northern Brazil. Pedigree information concerning animals born between 1942 and 2006 were analyzed. Population structure was performed using the Endog program. Out of the 140,628 animals studied, 67.7, 14.52 and 3.18% had complete pedigree record of the first, second and third parental generation, respectively. Inbreeding and average relatedness coefficients were low: 0.2 and 0.13%, respectively. However, these parameters may have been underestimated, since information on pedigree was incomplete. The effective number of founders was 370 and the genetic contribution of 10, 50 and 448 most influent ancestors explained 13.2, 28 and...

Genetic parameters for milk yield, lactation length and calving intervals of Murrah buffaloes from Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Ramos,Alcides de Amorim; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Souza,Julio César de; Pala,Akin.
The major objective of this study was to estimate heritability and genetic correlations between milk yield (MY) and calving interval (CI) and lactation length (LL) in Murrah buffaloes using Bayesian inference. The database used belongs to the genetic improvement program of four buffalo herds from Brazil. To obtain the estimates of variance and covariance, bivariate analyses were performed with the Gibbs sampler, using the program MTGSAM. The heritability coefficient estimates were 0.28, 0.03 and 0.15 for MY, CI and LL, respectively. The genetic correlations between MY and LL was moderate (0.48). However, the genetic correlation between MY and CI showed large HPD regions (highest posterior density interval). Milk yield was the only trait with clear...

The drought of the century in the Amazon Basin: an analysis of the regional variation of rainfall in South America in 1926 Acta Amazonica
Williams,Earle; Dall' Antonia,Alaor; Dall' Antonia,Vitoria; Almeida,Jorge Mathias de; Suarez,Francisco; Liebmann,Brant; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes.
The most severe drought in tropical South America during the 20th century occurred in 1926. This extreme El Nino year is further documented anecdotally, in an update of the river stage observations at Manaus, and in annual rainfall records. The annual rainfall anomaly is an east-west dipole over tropical South America, with drought to the west over the Amazon basin whose discharge is documented at Manaus, and with a surplus to the east and including the Nordeste region of Brazil. Speculations about a role for aerosol in aggravating the drought are discussed.

Perceptions of Amazonian deforestation in the British and Brazilian media Acta Amazonica
Ladle,Richard J.; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Todd,Peter A.; Malhado,Acacia C. M..
The Amazon rainforest stretches across more than six million square kilometers and nine countries. Of the original forest area it is thought that 18 per cent has been cleared, mainly for farming purposes. In Brazil, the main drivers of deforestation are beef ranching and soya production that together occupy more than 75 per cent of newly deforested land. The situation in the Amazon illustrates a fundamental dilemma facing environmentalists around the world: how to reconcile economic development with biodiversity conservation. In this paper the representation of this dilemma in the British and Brazilian news media is assessed. The results indicate that there were far more articles referring to deforestation in the Brazilian press (816 Brazilian to 29 UK)...

History of registered Gyr breed in Brazilian Northeast: population structure and genetic improvement of growth traits Ciência Rural
Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Martins,Jorge André Matias; Martins Filho,Raimundo; Bozzi,Riccardo.
This paper provides an evaluation of the population structure, phenotype and genetic trends of registered Gyr herd cattle in northeast Brazil. The study provides important baseline information for the management, conservation and potential population expansion of this economically and culturally important cattle breed. Pedigree data were analyzed for individuals born between 1964 and 2006. Body weight values were adjusted to 205 and 365 days of age for animals born between 1978 and 2006. Phenotypic change of zebu Gyr in northeast Brazil is solely due to environmental improvement. However, there is potential for artificial selection for weight gain in young cattle. Effective population size decreased during the 1990s and the average inbreeding coefficient...
