Organic milk production varies due to topographical and structural farm conditions, but very little information is available about this variation in Germany. The aim of this study was to identify typical major farm types (MFTs) of German organic dairy farms and to describe their farm, herd, and management characteristics. Based on data from 204 organic dairy farms from previous studies with representative samples, fourMFTs were identified by cluster analysis. Cluster-criteria were herd size, milk yield, region, and housing system. Identified MFTs were (A) medium-scale herds with low-tomedium milk yield, (B) small-scale herds with low milk yield, (C) large scale herds with high milk yield, and (D) medium-scale herds in Southern Germany with medium milk... |

A nationwide interdisciplinary intervention study in 106 German organic dairy farms was carried out in order to develop preventive animal health management strategies for mastitis and metabolic disorders and to implement and validate this concept. After an initial farm visit focusing on the health situation and the potential risk factors includ-ing housing, herd management, feeding and forage production, individual evidence-based advice was provided by the project team. Intervention measures to improve herd health were implemented and their effectiveness was monitored for two years. Udder health regarding milk somatic cell count and treatment incidence for mastitis improved significantly, whereas the percentage of dry-off-treatments with antibiotics and... |

Organic farming in Germany benefits from a large number of different national and regional political measures, in addition to a positive development of general demand of organic products. Despite these favorable conditions, however, fewer and fewer farms convert to organic farming. With the aim to expand the organically farmed land in Germany, the BMEL initiated the "Strategy for the Future of Organic Farming". One topic is to examine the possibilities of the development and improvement of the current organic subsidies policy. A nationwide survey amongst organic farms will also take into consideration the support of organic farming from the farmers’ point of view. In this context, 218 organic farms from all over Germany who participated in a... |

Organic farming attempts to ensure animal welfare on the basis of preventive measures. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the production system on animal welfare of dairy cows in organic and conventional farms. The results of the application of the Welfare Quality® protocol for dairy cows shows significant differences between organic and conventional farms while concurrently disclosing considerable differences between farms of the same production system. To further improve the animal welfare situation in organic farming and especially to better include animal health issues, result based components should be included into the current (purely action-oriented) EU organic farming regulation. |

Continuous development is needed within the farm to reach the goal of good animal health and welfare in organic livestock farming. The very different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types and can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. This article reviews frameworks, principles and practices for animal health and welfare planning which are relevant for organic livestock farming. This review is based on preliminary analyses carried out within a European project (acronym ANIPLAN) with participants from seven countries. The process begins with gathering knowledge about the current status within a given herd as background for making decisions and planning future... |

This report serves as a deliverable from the ANIPLAN project, with the original title ‘Evaluation report on state of the art regarding animal health and welfare planning in the participating countries’ (Deliverable 5.1). We chose to focus on the farmers’ perspective in each country, and ask the farmers who had participated in our project how they perceived the process of animal health and welfare planning. We did that using a questionnaire which each participant used in an interview with the farmer, asking some specific questions with the aim to evaluate how the farmers had experienced the ANIPLAN approach. We found that this focus was important as a supplement to other outcomes from the project, such as reduction of medicines (Ivemeyer et al., 2011) and... |

As a part of the study „Health and performance of dairy cows in organic farming from an interdisciplinary point of view – an (intervention-) study on metabolic disorders and mastitis with regard to forage production, feeding management and husbandry practices” different udder health and metabolic parameters were determined in 106 dairy farms in Germany between January 2008 and April 2010. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare udder health and metabolic data in dry period and early lactation within the scope of a preliminary analysis. The analysis shows that relations exist between disturbances of the metabolism health and the udder health. Significant correlations between ketosis and hypocalcämia and udder health make clear that their... |

Grazing provides livestock better opportunities to act out their species specific behaviour compared to the restrictive stable conditions. Studies on the effect of grazing on animal welfare in dairy farming in Germany are rare and have not been conducted under the specific conditions of organic dairy farming. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of grazing on animal welfare of dairy cows in organic and conventional farming based on the Welfare Quality® protocol for dairy cattle. In this paper, we present the initial evaluation of a comparison between zero grazing and summer grazing. The first results indicate an improvement in most welfare principles during the summer months for dairy cows with summer grazing, except for between... |

For reasons of animal health, milk yield and for environmental issues an optimal supply of protein and energy for dairy cows is essential. The aim of this study is to examine potential protein and energy malnutrition and surplus in dairy herds. We present a comparison of the protein and energy supply between 18 conventional and 16 organic dairy herds. Initial results indicate an undersupply on energy in the first one hundred days of lactation in both the organic and conventional feeding regimes. It is easier to provide an adequate protein supply in conventional conditions in the first one hundred days than in organic ones. A balanced supply is guaranteed for a mere 21,3 % of the organic cows. In the second one hundred days this increases to 26,5 %,... |

The Stable School concept aims at common learning in farmer groups and has previously been implemented in Danish organic dairy farms. Focusing on herd health, four regional Stable Schools on in total 20 German organic dairy farms were initiated following a modified approach; i.e. additionally providing data on the health status of the farms based on a standardized protocol. After one year we investigated the farmers’ opinions of this modified concept and assessed the implementation of measures. The participants expressed a positive attitude toward this tool; they appreciated the joint search for effective and feasible measures and evaluated the self-determined approach in the Stable School as highly motivating. Accordingly, the compliance regarding... |
