Since the beginning of the industrial tuna fishing activity in the Western Indian Ocean by foreign fishing vessels, Seychelles has benefited substantially, and Port Victoria is now considered the major tuna transshipment port in the region. This activity represents a major source of foreign exchange inflows in the Seychelles's economy not only in terms of earnings from the issue of fishing licenses to foreign fishing vessels to fish in our EEZ, but also in term of these vessels expenditure on local purchases of goods and a number of shore based services which is consumed when these vessels call in port.
