Atmospheric concentrations and deposition fluxes of PCDD/F and PCB have been evaluated over a 1-year period in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Etang de Thau, France). Indicative PBDE air concentrations in the hot season are also reported in this work. ∑2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and ∑18PCBs (gas + particulate) air concentrations ranged from 67 to 1700 fg m−3 and from 13 to 95 pg m−3, respectively whereas ∑8PBDEs (gas + particulate) summer time levels varied from 158 to 230 pg m−3. The PCDD/F and PCB atmospheric occurrence over Thau lagoon and subsequent inputs to the surface waters are determined by an assemble of factors, being the seasonality of atmospheric concentration, the air mass origin and meteorological conditions important drivers. Total (wet + dry)... |

The Mediterranean and Black seas are unique marine environments subject to important anthropogenic pressures due to direct and indirect loads of atmospheric inputs of organochlorine compounds (OCls) from primary and secondary sources. Here we report the results obtained during two east-west sampling cruises in June 2006 and May 2007 from Barcelona to Istanbul and Alexandria, respectively, where gas-phase and aerosol-phase samples were collected. Both matrices were analyzed for 41 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including dioxin-like congeners, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The values reported in this study for gas-phase HCB and Sigma 41PCB limit of detection (LOD) to 418.3 pg m(-3) and from 81.99 to 931.6 pg m(-3) respectively) are in the same range of... |

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in the airshed of a given environment may participate in exchange / deposition processes that will determine their inputs to the terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems. In addition, physico-chemical properties of POPs may favour long range atmospheric transport to other areas, even reaching remote zones. It is therefore important to determine the airshed POPs concentration in order to evaluate the potential amounts that may participate in the mentioned processes. Coastal lagoons are characterized by a high biodiversity and intense primary production leading to both ecological and economical considerable importance. Thau lagoon seems to be under intense anthropogenic pressure (urban, industrial, agricultural and shell... |
