Redescription and morphological variability of Darwinula stevensoni (Brady & Robertson, 1870) (Crustacea, Ostracoda) OMA
Rossetti, G.; Martens, K..
The species Darwinula stevensoni is extensively redescribed. Morphological variability of both valves and soft parts is assessed in several geographical and climatically distant populations and is found to be minimal or non-existant. Only size significantly varies between populations and this can be attributed to the differences in ambient temperatures during the larval development. Number and shape of muscle scars also vary, but this both within and between populations. Valve shape and chaetotaxy of limbs are remarkably constant. One female from an Italian population has aberrant Mx2-palps, but this specimen is considered a teratological case. Earlier records of males of D. stevensoni and the taxonomic position of the...

Taxonomic revision of the recent and Holocene representatives of the Family Darwinulidae (Crustacea, Ostracoda), with a description of three new genera OMA
Rossetti, G.; Martens, K..
The Darwinulidae, the only surviving family of the superfamily Darwinuloidea, are revised and 28 extant species are retained. Twenty-six species (2 of which as yet formally undescribed) are allocated to 5 genera, 3 of which are here described as new; 2 species have an uncertain position within the family because of their insufficient original description are listed here as species inquirendae. New genera are characterised on combinations of soft part and valve characters, but the chaetotaxy of the limbs seems most conservative and most suitable the identification of genera. Darwinula s.s. and Microdarwinula are, with regard to recent species, monospecific.Alicenula nov. gen. is...

A reassessment of Paralimnocythere Carbonnel, 1965 (Crustacea, Ostracoda, Limnocytherinae), with a description of a new genus and two new species OMA
Martens, K..
The Recent and Fossil species of Paralimnocythere are reassessed and the genus is characterized using both soft part and valve morphology. Seventeen species, of which eleven have living representatives, are here retained. Relictocytherina Negadaev-Nikonov, 1968 is confirmed as a synonym of Paralimnocythere; R. orginalis (Negadaev-Nikonov, 1965), the type species is furthermore synonymous with P. relicta (Lilljeborg, 1863). Paralimnocythere psammmophila (Flössner, 1965) and P. compressa (Brady & Norman, 1889) are both reinstated as valid species, quite different from P. relicta. All Recent Balkan species are retained as...

On Klieopsis n. gen., with a description of Cypridopsis horai Klie, 1927 (Crustacea, Ostracoda) OMA
Martens, K.; Meisch, C.; Marmonier, P..
Klieopsis n. gen. is here described to comprise the species Cypridopsis horai Klie, reported from India. The new genus is characterized by an aberrant inner list on the RV, by a furca with a cylindrical trunk and by the reduction of two claws (G2 and Gm) on the A2 to short setae. After re-examination of the type materials, Cypridopsis caerulescens Klie from Kenya is synonymized with K. horai, which is here furthermore reported for the first time from Israel (surroundings of the Dead Sea). The latter specimens are extensively described, and a discussion on the taxonomic position of the new genus is offered. An apparently similar species from Sardegna, Cypridopsis...

Revision of the genus Leucocythere Kaufmann, 1892 (Crustacea, Ostracoda, Limnocytheridae) with the description of a new species and two new tribes OMA
Danielopol, D.L.; Martens, K.; Casale, L.M..
The main aim of the present contribution is to provide an unequivocal diagnosis of the genus Leucocyhtere. It appeared, however, that this could only be effected when embodied in a broader taxonomic framework. The subfamily Limnocytherinae is thus divided into four tribes: Limnocytherini, Dinarocytherini, Cytheridellini and Leucocytherini and diagnoses are provided for these taxa. The latter two are new to science while the rank of Dinarocyhterini was changed from subfamily to tribe. Three genera are lodged in the Leucocytherini: Leucocythere Kaufmann, 1892, Potamocythere Schornikov, 1986 and Ovambocythere Martens, 1989. The former, nominate, genus is characterized and its type species, L....
