THE ECONOMICS OF REFUGE DESIGN FOR BT CORN AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Dobbins, Craig L.; Edwards, C. Richard.
Planting Bt corn on large areas may lead to European corn borer (ECB) resistance to Bt. Scientists recommend planting a non-Bt corn refuge as part of a resistance management strategy. Different refuge configurations may impact farm profits differently. This paper analyzes the economics of alternative refuge configurations in Indiana.

AN OPTIMAL CORN ROOTWORM SCOUTING PROGRAM FOR IMPROVED PROFITABILITY OF AREAWIDE PEST MANAGEMENT IN THE EASTERN CORN BELT AgEcon
West, Amelia; Martin, Marshall A..
Economic analyses show that without cost reductions, Areawide Pest Management for corn rootworm control is not cost effective in Illinois/Indiana where a variant form of the western corn rootworm exists. This paper examines strategies for reducing scouting/costs and determining the minimal scouting effort necessary to maintain effective adult suppression.

ECONOMIC SURVEY RESULTS AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS OF FIXED AND VARIABLE COSTS FOR THE AREAWIDE PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AgEcon
Stair, Christina Welch; Quan, Peter; Martin, Marshall A..
Economic questionnaires were administered in 1997 and 1998 to farmers in the Indiana/Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa sites involved in the Areawide Pest Management (AWPM) program for the control of corn rootworms. These questionnaires provided information regarding variable and fixed costs of production for fields located within the management site and also the companion acreage. The economic analysis indicated that yields, variable costs per acre, and machinery costs per acre were not statistically different within a site across the inner core, outer ring, and companion acreage, with relatively few exceptions. This gives a solid baseline for a Net Present Value comparison between the soil insecticide and AWPM methods for control of corn rootworms, since...

MANAGING THE CORN ROOTWORM VARIANT: EMPIRICAL RESULTS FROM AN INDIANA FARMER SURVEY AgEcon
Harbor, Anetra L.; Martin, Marshall A..
The emergence of a corn rootworm "variant" has reduced the effectiveness of a corn-soybean rotation in some areas of Indiana. This research identifies potential control alternatives. Empirical results suggest that younger, more educated managers of larger farms would be the most likely to adopt transgenic corn for rootworm control.

Adoption of Transgenic Crops by Smallholder Farmers in Entre Rios, Argentina AgEcon
Paredes, Cecilia; Martin, Marshall A..
This is a study of the adoption of transgenic crops by 120 smallholder farmers interviewed in July 2005 in the communities of San Jose de Feliciano and La Paz in the Entre Rios Province of Argentina. Logistic regression results indicate that access to a planter is essential for smallholders to adopt Bt corn, while adopters of Roundup Ready™ soybeans have larger farms, access to credit, availability of all essential machinery, more years of schooling, and are primarily located in the La Paz community.

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF BT CORN: A MULTI-STATE COMPARISON AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Edwards, C. Richard; Dobbins, Craig L..
Bt corn offers a powerful tool to control European corn borers and some other pests. Because pest infestations and farming practices differ across the Corn Belt, economic benefits also differ. This research estimates the value of Bt corn across the Corn Belt. Results identify areas where Bt adoption is economically justified.

The Value of Bt Corn in Southwest Kansas: A Monte Carlo Simulation Approach AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Buschman, Lawrent L.; Edwards, C. Richard; Sloderbeck, Phillip E.; Higgins, Randall A..
While most Corn Belt farmers consider planting Bt corn to control European corn borer, southwestern Kansas farmers must also take into account an array of other insect pests, including corn rootworm, spider mites, and southwestern corn borer. This research uses a decision analysis framework to estimate the expected economic value of Bt corn in southwest Kansas. Mean per acre Bt values ranged from $12.49 to $34.60, well above the technology fee assumed to be $14 per unit, or $5.25 per acre at a seeding rate of 30,000 seeds per acre. The minimum value over all scenarios was $8.69 per acre. Using Monte Carlo simulation, it was shown that European and southwestern corn borer infestation probabilities, expected corn price, and expected pest-free yields are...

SOYBEAN PRODUCTION COSTS: AN ANALYSIS OF THE UNITED STATES, BRAZIL, AND ARGENTINA AgEcon
Huerta, Alexandria I.; Martin, Marshall A..
U.S. farmers' share of world soybean exports has declined, while Brazil and Argentina are gaining. There is much debate concerning the competitive advantage of U.S. versus Latin American soybean producers. A detailed analysis of soybean production costs under different systems and technologies in the United States, Argentina, and Brazil was conducted.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CORN ROOTWORM MANAGEMENT: AREAWIDE PEST MANAGEMENT VERSUS SOIL INSECTICIDES- A NET PRESENT VALUE APPROACH AgEcon
Stair, Christina Welch; Quan, Peter; Martin, Marshall A..
In 1996, the USDA initiated research in three Midwestern locations to control corn rootworms with a scouting and aerial spraying program. The preliminary economic results suggest that without a modest subsidy, an areawide pest management approach is not as economical as the use of soil insecticides

Assessing Input Brand Loyalty among U.S. Agricultural Producers AgEcon
Harbor, Anetra L.; Martin, Marshall A.; Akridge, Jay T..
This study explores the prevalence and determinants of brand loyalty for agricultural input products. Results suggest that loyalty for both expendable and capital inputs is high among commercial agricultural producers in the United States. Producer attitudes, beliefs, and some demographic characteristics are useful identifiers of brand loyalty among commercial producers.

Limited Resource Families and Child Health Status: A Case Study in Montero, Bolivia AgEcon
Martin, Marshall A.; Taulman, Lesley.
Child malnutrition is a problem that poses social and economic costs to individuals, households, communities, and nations, like Bolivia. Childhood malnutrition can be reduced through effective policy and health interventions such as those of the Consejo de Salud Rural Andino (CSRA) in Montero, Bolivia. The CSRA is a non-profit, private organization that operates three health care clinics in Montero, Bolivia. Low-income mothers and their children are provided with free or minimal-cost public health education and basic pre- and post natal medical services . Three separate clinic areas serve three different populations in terms of child nutritional status and demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Effectiveness and priority intervention points...
