THE IMPACTS OF TRANSPORTATION DEREGULATION ON WHEAT SHIPMENTS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AgEcon
McMullen, B. Starr; Martin, Michael V.; Cabeza, Felix.
A network programming model (NETFLOW) was used to examine the impact of modal transport rate changes resulting from transportation deregulation on modal traffic shares and total wheat transport costs. The analysis reveals that shifts in wheat traffic to rail and away from truck-barge and truck are related to rail deregulation. The model also provides evidence that lower rates under transportation deregulation have significantly decreased the total cost of shipping wheat from country origins to export elevators.

THE IMPACTS OF THE CONSERVATION RESERVE PROGRAM ON RURAL COMMUNITIES: THE CASE OF THREE OREGON COUNTIES AgEcon
Martin, Michael V.; Radtke, Hans; Eleveld, Bart; Nofziger, S. Dianne.
Using an economic input/output model, the community personal income impacts of participating in the Conservation Reserve Program were analyzed for three rural Oregon counties. While individual farmers may benefit from participation, there may be net adverse impact on the community if the retired land is relatively productive or if the inputs that are no longer purchased would have been purchased locally. These negative effects may be exacerbated if participating farmers quit farming and leave the local area or if the Conservation Reserve Program benefits go to absentee landowners. The Conservation Reserve Program may then represent a conflict between community and national policy objectives.

The Agricultural Business Management Program: Lessons Learned at Oregon State University AgEcon
Lindsey, Patricia J.; Martin, Michael V..
This study argues that the uniqueness of the agricultural industry justifies the development of agribusiness as an alternative degree major within traditional agricultural economics department. Successful curricula must focus on elements of decision making that are unique to agricultural business industries. In particular, agribusiness program should complement and not duplicate the curricula offered by business school. Special characteristics of agriculture were identified and presented as the conceptual framework for agribusiness programs. Using Oregon State University as a case study, the analysis examines in depth the experiences and lessons learned from its implementation of agribusiness management programs.
