| The coast region of Paraná State, Brazil, has a great potential for growing of pupunha trees aiming palm heart production due to climate conditions. There were around one million pupunha trees planted at small farmers area, totalizing about 200 ha, in this region by the end of 2004. This fact confirms the specie as a sustainable and economicaly viable alternative for small farmers as long as the natural stands of juçara (Euterpe edulis) are raryng. | A provenance/progenies trial of grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) was established in the Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil. The purpose was to identify genetically superior individuals in order to assure good material for future seed orchard. The genetic matherial was based on 60 half-sib progenies from eighteen Australian provenances and one control. Progenies were evaluated in randomized blocks with seven replications, five plants per plot and spacing of 3 m x 3 m (9 m2 per plant). Significant gains were estimated through selection of the 200 best trees (23,33%), for cilindric volume, at 10 years age, based on genetic values, aiming to establish a seedling seed orchard; or selecting the best twenty trees (33,33%), towards a clonal seed orchard. |

| An experiment was established in Paranaguá, located in the costal region of the State of Paraná, in southern Brasil, in order to evaluate commercial yield of hearth-of-palm produced by Peach-Palm (Bactris gasipaes) established under the following four different initial spacings: T1 2x1m (5000 seedlings/ha); T2 3x1m (3333 seedlings/ha); T3 1,5x1x1m (8000 seedlings/ha); and T4 2x1x1m (6666 seedlings/ha). Mineral fertilizers (NPK) were applied at planting as well as subsequently. | O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a variação radial da densidade básica em amostras de madeira de diferentes procedências de Grevillea robusta Cunn. As amostras foram retiradas de árvores com sete anos, de um teste de procedência instalado em área da Itaipu Binacional, Município de Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná. As árvores foram selecionadas em três níveis, de acordo com o seu crescimento volumétrico, classificado como excelente, intermediário e lento. | Foram avaliadas a deposição de serapilheira e de nutrientes em quatro procedências de grevilea (Grevillea robusta Cunn), de quatro anos de idade, plantadas na Região de Quedas do Iguaçu, em solo classificado como LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Distroférrico (Haplustox). | Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994, respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the states of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2002, twenty eight genotypes were selected in the Presidente Castelo Branco-PR district whose seeds were utilized for the installing second generation progenies test in Avaré-SP. | Twenty and twenty three seed provenances of Grevillea robusta Cunn were imported from Australia, in 1993 and 1994 respectively, by Embrapa Florestas. This genetic germoplasm was utilized for starting a breeding program in the State of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total surface occupied by Grevillea experiments managed by Embrapa Florestas reachs 27,13 ha, being provenance tests, embracing 11,22 ha, installed in 1994, and progenies tests, comprising 15,91 ha, planted in 1994. | Twenty one provenances of Grevillea robusta Cunn were tested at Nova Esperança and Quedas do Iguaçu, Paraná state and Anhembi, São Paulo state, Brazil. With the aim of comparing the performance of the original provenances with the comercial provenance collected in Maringa, Paraná state included as a control. Provenance trials were installed in a randomized block design with rectangular plots, each one with six plants spaced 3 m x 3 m, with 15 replications. | The grevilea, Grevillea robusta (Cunn), species of the Proteaceae family, native of Australia it was introduced in Brazil and in several other countries of the world, for ornamentation, wind breaks and to shade agricultural crops. In general the grevilea has few pests in its area of natural dispersion and also in Brazil. Recently a severe infestation of the cicada Aethalion reticulatum (Hemiptera: Aethalionidae) was verified in experimental plantings of grevilea’s plantation in São Miguel Arcanjo, SP. This is the first verification of A. reticulatum causing damages to G. robusta. A. reticulatum is an sap sucking insect and the damages in grevilea are similar to the observed in fruit plants. |
