A 6-month survey on temporary meiofauna including settling specimens of macrofauna species shows the high mortality rates of young Spisula subtruncata . Considering this mortality, its importance of density fluctuations of the macrobenthos, it is suggested to avoid screens of less than 1 mm mesh-size in studies on structure and long term fluctuations of benthic communities. It is difficult to predict macrofauna density from the success of seasonal spatfall but these newly settle specimens represent a production available during periods of recruitment (1 to 1,4 g/m super(2)/month for Spisula subtruncata)). |
