Comparative Advantage of India in Agricultural Exports vis-a-vis Asia: A Post-reforms Analysis AgEcon
Shinoj, P.; Mathur, V.C..
Recent developments in the international trade scenario and corresponding alterations in India’s foreign trade policies have depicted far reaching implications for India’s agricultural sector in general and agricultural exports in particular. The present study has ascertained the changes in comparative advantage status of India’s major agricultural exports vis-a-vis other Asian players during the post-reforms period (1991-2004). It has been found that in exports of certain commodities like cashew and oil meals, India has been able to maintain its comparative advantage, but several others like tea, coffee, spices, marine products, etc. have been negatively affected. Diagnosis of Pulses Performance of India AgEcon
Srivastava, S.K.; Sivaramane, N.; Mathur, V.C..
India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world accounting for about 25 per cent of global production, 27 per cent of global consumption and about 33 per cent of the world’s area under pulses. However, compared to cereals like wheat and paddy, the growth rate of area and production of pulses is negligible and there exists wide variability in their yield in different states of country. The study has explored the growth and dynamics of production and consumption of major pulses in different states of India and has made a comparative evaluation of key economic factors affecting their production. Pulses have exhibited a grim picture in their production performance both spatially and temporally. Area substitution coupled with the biased...

Analysis of Demand for Major Spices in India AgEcon
Shinoj, P.; Mathur, V.C..
India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of spices in the world. The demand scenario for major spices in India has been comprehensively examined in the study. The shift in preferences of domestic consumers for food items, increasing urbanization and rising incomes, altered demographic and social factors and the changes in productivity of spices have brought about changes in the pattern of their consumption and demand. A two-stage budgeting framework, which is a recent development in the theory, of demand with quadratic terms of total expenditure / food expenditure and is an appropriate technique for computing the expenditure elasticities, has been employed to work out the expenditure elasticities for spices in India. The resultant expenditure...
