The “not-so-modern” consumer – considerations on food prices, food security, new technologies and market distortions AgEcon
Tsioumanis, Asterios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
Although food quality and food safety issues seem to dominate discussion and research in Europe, price inflation and economic recession may pose questions over food abundance over the coming years. For the first time since the early seventies, market stability for a number of commodities is seriously questioned. The paper tackles the fluctuation of food prices in the last decade and the reasons behind recent record prices in a series of commodities, trying to investigate whether food shortages may create new problems, even for relatively economically stable nations. Lowering stock levels that induce price volatility, production shortfalls due to adverse conditions that are often correlated to climate change, oil prices, changing diet patterns in regions...

Factors Affecting the Competitiveness of the Greek Wine Enterprises and Cooperatives AgEcon
Konstantinidis, Christos; Sergaki, Panagiota; Mattas, Konstadinos; Kontogeorgos, Achilleas.
The present paper investigates the effect of certain economic factors on the competitiveness of Greek Wine Enterprises and Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives (UACs). Data on 41 wineries and 10 UACs of Greece was collected for a period of three years (2004-2006). Financial analysis results were used with the help of a fixed effect model-panel data technique- using profitability as dependent variable in order to measure the competitiveness of wineries. The results indicated that the size of the enterprise as well as the square of the capital intensity have a positive influence on the winery’s profit.

Using Value Priorities to Explain Differences in Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Food AgEcon
Springer, A.; Tsioumanis, Asterios; Papastefanou, G.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
During the last few years the public has become in general more ambivalent towards new technologies and while expecting technological innovation to make their life better, they still old concerns about possible adverse effects deriving from the use of these technologies. The present paper offers a comparative approach on two European member countries concerning attitudes towards genetically modified food. The paper focus on values because previous research has shown that socio-economic factors can only partially explain differences in attitudes towards genetically modified food. Strong national differences lead to the idea that cultural differences should also be taken into account. Following the approach of Schwartz, the scope of this research paper is to...

Agricultural Productivity Growth in the Euro-Med Region: Is there Evidence of Convergence? AgEcon
Galonopulos, K.; Surry, Yves R.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
This paper measures agricultural productivity growth by means of the sequential Malmquist Total Factor Productivity (TFP) index among a set of thirty-two countries including West European, Central and East European (CEE) and Middle East and North African (MENA) countries for the period 1961-2002. At a second stage it is also investigated whether this measure is converging among the countries, by employing cross-sectional tests for absolute and conditional β-convergence as well as for club convergence. Results suggest that despite the fact that the CEE and MENA countries exhibit a high rate of productivity growth after the 1990s, absolute convergence cannot be accepted. Still, evidence for conditional convergence is found and the formation of two separate...

Agricultural productivity growth in the Mediterranean and tests of convergence among countries AgEcon
Galanopoulos, Konstantinos; Lindberg, Emma; Surry, Yves R.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
This paper measures agricultural productivity among a set of thirteen Mediterranean countries which includes two EU- 15 countries (Greece and Spain), another two EU- 25 (Cyprus and Malta) one country under accession negotiations (Turkey) and eight Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia) from 1961 to 2002. The objective of the paper is twofold: Firstly, to analyse agricultural productivity growth in the Mediterranean countries by means of the sequential Malmquist Total Factor Productivity (TFP) index and secondly, to investigate whether this measure is converging among these countries. In terms of the first objective, TFP indices are decomposed into efficiency changes and technical...

Consumers’ Willingness To Pay for Value-Added Food Products; Abstract Only AgEcon
Tsakiridou, Efthimia; Mattas, Konstadinos; Mpletsa, Zoi.
The increasing importance of food quality and food safety has led to an increased consumer concern for certified quality products. However, the market share of certified quality products still remains very small. The aspect of “quality” has also been accepted as an important ingredient of marketing that offers producers a great opportunity to differentiate themselves in the market and add value to their products (Jervell and Borgen, 2004). In the case of agricultural products producers may view a quality certification (either it is a certification of traceability or a quality label) as a tool that protects them in an environment of distrust and as a promotion strategy that will add value to their products and justify higher prices for them. However, in...

Multilateral or Regional Agreement: The Case of Mediterranean Non-EU Countries AgEcon
Mattas, Konstadinos; Tsakiridou, Efthimia; Somwaru, Agapi.
Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries are at a crossroad regarding potential trade reforms. The EU is not only the world's largest market for the region's agricultural products, but also remains the prime outlet for these Mediterranean countries' exports. An applied general equilibrium model is used to assess the impact of various trade reform options in the region. Results suggest that the region might benefit most under special provisions for developing countries. Under global trade reform, MENA preferences with EU might be eroded, with EU Mediterranean countries like Greece benefit the most with global trade reform.

Employing Real Options Methodology for Decision Making in Greenhouse Technology AgEcon
Tzouramani, Irene; Mattas, Konstadinos.
Latest developments in investment analysis offer a number of valuable insights into how to evaluate investment opportunities encountering the weaknesses of net present value criterion. More specific, irreversibility, uncertainty and the choice of timing are conditions that net present value does not include but they alter the investment decision in critical way. Employing contingent claims analysis in tangible investments several assumptions made by discount cash flow method are concerned and better assessment results can be derived. In this work, an attempt is made to apply real options methodology in agricultural investments. Many agricultural investors face a growing uncertainty environment with high sunk investments and net present value criterion has...

Crop biodiversity repercussions of subsidized organic farming in Greece AgEcon
Nastis, Stefanos A.; Michailidis, Anastasios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
This paper analyzes the impact of CAP financial assistance on crop biodiversity under uncertainty. A stochastic production function is employed and estimated to assess whether risk-averse farmers hedge risk by diversifying their portfolio of crops, thus increasing crop biodiversity. The model is applied to farm-level data of organic crop farms in Greece. Organic farming financial assistance poses a double-edged sword: even though it is considered agrobiodiversity enhancing as a cultivation method, subsidizing it can become agrobiodiversity reducing, since farmers may select to cultivate only the subsidized crops. The study shows that risk aversion leads to crop biodiversity conservation. However, providing CAP financial assistance on certain crops appears...

IMPACTS OF CAP REFORM ON RURAL EMPLOYMENT: A MULTIMODELING CROSS COUNTRY APPROACH AgEcon
Mattas, Konstadinos; Arfini, Filippo; Midmore, Peter; Schmitz, P. Michael; Surry, Yves R..
Expected impacts due to recently introduced CAP reforms can be felt beyond the agricultural sector affecting the entire regional economy. Employment levels will be affected within the farming sector and probably non-agricultural sector will feel the pinch too. Policies influencing employment levels attract the attention of the media and the public. Therefore, policy makers are more sensitive on employment issues than rural and agricultural policies as it is widely admitted that no vibrant regions in Europe can be envisioned without enhancing job opportunities. The influence of CAP reform on employment has not been thoroughly studied within a comprehensive approach, accounting for agricultural and non-agricultural effects and covering the diversity of EU...

Fisheries policies impacts consideration towards the development of rural coastal areas AgEcon
Loizou, Efstratios; Chatzitheodoridis, Fotis; Mattas, Konstadinos; Polymeros, Konstantinos.
The current study aims to examine the effectiveness of fisheries policies and specifically of the Greek Operational Programme for Fisheries, 2007-13. In specific, aims to examine and assess possible impacts generated, in the regional economy of Voreio and Notio Aigaio from its four axis, with particularity to the forth one. For this a regional Input-Output model was built in order to capture direct and indirect impacts in terms of output, employment and income. Results indicate that the dynamics of the fisheries sector in the regional economy are very weak and along with the continuous shrinking of the sector, leads to the necessity of supporting alternative vocational activities for the development of coastal rural areas. Though, results indicate that the...

Mobile telephony as a change drivers in rural areas AgEcon
Michailidis, Anastasios; Loizou, Efstratios; Nastis, Stefanos A.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The aim of the paper is to reveal the most important causes of mobile telephony use by rural residents. In particular, the examination of the expected changes due to use of mobile phones and the assessment of the major causes that drive rural residents to desire mobile telephony access constitute the main objective of the paper. In addition, the study extends the employment of binomial econometric methodologies into rural development issues. Interesting results are revealed from the three discrete segments of rural populations regarding the drivers of mobile phone use. The majority of the users belong to the so-called “farmers”, where the dominant causes of mobile phone use are different from the rest ones. More specifically, causes such as region and...

The adoption of water saving irrigation practices in the Region of West Macedonia AgEcon
Michailidis, Anastasios; Nastis, Stefanos A.; Loizou, Efstratios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The use of irrigation water for agricultural production requires innovative and sustainable research and an appropriate transfer of water saving technologies. The main aim of this paper is to explore the irrigating behaviour of farmers examining factors affecting their decision to adopt novel water saving practices. In order to achieve the above aim both summary statistics and multivariate methodologies are employed. In particular, a two-step cluster analysis was used to explore the different adoption levels of water saving practices and a categorical regression model was estimated to explain this variation. Data were collected through a survey addressing 400 irrigators, carried out in 2008 in a typical Greek rural area. Results show that although...

Exploring Convenience Food Consumption through a Structural Equation Model AgEcon
Botonaki, Anna; Natos, Dimitrios; Mattas, Konstadinos.
In this study the model of convenience orientation suggested by Scholderer and Grunert (2005) is applied in order to examine consumer behavior in the context of convenience food usage. The empirical results indicate that socio-demographic characteristics affect behavior both directly and indirectly through perceived time resources and convenience orientation towards meal preparation and clearing up. Findings seem to be important for all the bodies involved in the marketing of convenience food products since they describe the way various consumer characteristics interact affecting the consumption of such products.

Hedonic Analysis of Retail Egg Prices AgEcon
Karipidis, Philippos I.; Tsakiridou, Efthimia; Tabakis, Nikolaos M.; Mattas, Konstadinos.
The fast growth of product differentiation affects even the raw food product market and causes substantial price variations. The hedonic price technique is applied to examine raw-egg attributes because of a recent transformation from an undifferentiated to a highly differentiated market. The effects of product attributes, production methods, distribution, and product image on retail egg prices are considered. Results reveal that retail egg prices are influenced by specific product attributes including nutritional characteristics and unconventional production methods. Results provide knowledge useful in the development of marketing strategies and suggest areas for possible involvement of policymakers.

Comparing Consumer Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Food in Europe AgEcon
Springer, A.; Mattas, Konstadinos; Papastefanou, G.; Tsioumanis, Asterios.
As biotechnology evolves new methods of genetic engineering are now being applied to the production and processing of foods. This paper is trying to explore the attitudes of the European consumers towards genetic modification of food. Using survey data of the EU member countries the proposed research paper is planned to have a threefold output: 1) providing a comparative ranking of the EU member countries in relation to the prevalence of rejection of genetically modified food, 2) uncovering intra-european differences in genetic food engineering rejection as being based on socio-demographic and informational resp. knowledge based differentials between EU countries and 3) specifying the importance of socio-economic and informational determinants of a...

Potential on Using Cultural Syndromes for Explaining Differences in Attitudes in Northern and Southern EU Countries AgEcon
Tsioumanis, Asterios; Mattas, Konstadinos; Papastefanou, G.; Springer, A..
Nowadays, it is more realistic to view the development of a new technology as a result of a complex social system of interactions and decisions. Understanding the public's range of views on biotechnology is important for decision makers, in order to be able to anticipate potential acceptance problems or, one step further, to take consumer or public desires and concerns into account so that desirable applications can be developed. Previous work from the same research group, using data from Eurobarometer surveys, was trying to explore the attitudes of the European consumers towards genetic modification of food. Emerging differences in attitudes towards genetically modified food have not been explained adequately in most cases using only sociodemographic...
