A single bio-energetics growth and reproduction model for the oyster Crassostrea gigas in six Atlantic ecosystems ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Stephane; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Goulletquer, Philippe; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du...

Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Masson, Nadine; D'Amico, Florence; Deynu, Danielle; Tournaire, Marie-pierre; Trut, Gilles; Cantin, Christian; Pellier, Claude.

Spatial patterns in the condition index of the wild Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in a macrotidal coastal ecosystem: Influence of tidal processes and beyond ArchiMer
Gasmi, Sonia; Bernard, Ismael; Pouvreau, Stephane; Maurer, Daniele; Schaal, Gauthier; Ganthy, Florian; Cominassi, Louise; Allain, Gwenhael; Sautour, Benoit; David, Valerie.
In macrotidal coastal ecosystems, spatial heterogeneity of the water column properties is induced by both oceanic and continental influences. Hydrodynamic processes generate a land-sea gradient of environmental conditions, affecting the biological performances of sedentary organisms. The aim of the present study is to establish an extensive spatial assessment in the reproductive investment of the wild Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in Arcachon Bay. This is done by looking for a relationship between the Lawrence and Scott condition index (LSCI) and two tidal processes: the immersion level (IL) and the local oceanic flushing time (LoFt). The LSCI of C. gigas was assessed, just before gamete release, at 68 sampling stations in Arcachon Bay. Oyster...

Influence of phytoplankton diversity and community structure on oyster reproduction (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Gonzales, Arriagada; Bernard, Ismael; Maurer, Daniele; Auby, Isabelle; Gasmi, Sonia; Pouvreau, Stephane; David, Valerie.
Arcachon Bay is one of the most important spat-supplying area for the French oyster production. During the last 16 years, the local economic activity of spat production has been threatened recurrently by a high interannual variability of seed harvesting. This threatened spat production was attributed to reproductive problems highlighted by both a delay in oyster spawning and a decrease of small larvae abundances since 1995. Recent works showed that these two reproduction indices seem closely related to climate change that might controls the phytoplankton communities of the Bay. Food availability in term of quantity and quality appears thus as a serious track to understand the reproductive problems of oyster in the Arcachon Bay. The aim of this work was...

Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele.
The Arcachon Basin is an environment particularly favorable to the reproduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas, introduced in France in 1970. An estimated 60 to 70% of oysters sold in France are native to the Bay of Arcachon. This is why following the strong deficit of spatfall of 1998, a study was undertaken to determine whether this event was part of or not fluctuations in 'natural' catchment. To do this, we had to identify the factors responsible for the variability of larval recruitment and study their impact on the various stages of reproduction. The results of this study are based on analysis of historical data (1985-2003) and the acquisition of new data during five breeding seasons, with very different intensities of recruitment (1999 to...

Phytoplankton versus macrophyte contribution to primary production and biogeochemical cycles of a coastal mesotidal system. A modelling approach ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Trut, Gilles; Del Amo, Y.; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
This study presents an assessment of the contributions of various primary producers to the global annual production and N/P cycles of a coastal system, namely the Arcachon Bay, by means of a numerical model. This 3D model fully couples hydrodynamic with ecological processes and simulates nitrogen, silicon and phosphorus cycles as well as phytoplankton, macroalgae and seagrasses. Total annual production rates for the different components were calculated for different years (2005, 2007 and 2009) during a time period of drastic reduction in seagrass beds since 2005. The total demand of nitrogen and phosphorus was also calculated and discussed with regards to the riverine inputs. Moreover, this study presents the first estimation of particulate organic carbon...

Scourzic, Thomas; Loyen, M.; Fabre, E.; Tessier, Anne; Dalias, N.; Trut, Gilles; Maurer, Daniele; Simmonnet, Bastien.
Within the framework of the mission of creation of a “Parc Naturel Marin" in the Bay of Arcachon, estimations of the oysters stocks in the Bay were realized in 2011 by the engineering consulting firm Océanide, in association with the “Agence des Aires Marines Protégées”, the French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea ( IFREMER) - Station of Arcachon and the Departmental Direction of Territories and the Sea of Gironde – “Délégation à la Mer et au Littoral (DLM)”. The evaluation of the stock of cultivated oysters was made from production statements of the shellfish farmers, collected in 2010 by the DML. The estimation of the stocks of wild oysters was made using a stratified two degrees field sampling. Finally, 82 500 t of oysters are present...

Maurer, Daniele.
study of the experimental growth of the oyster Crassostrea gigas was undertaken of 1985 to 1988, parallel to a follow-up hydrobiologic of the medium, in three sites of the basin of Arcachon. - The characteristics of growth of the studied sites proved very stable during various years ; they are also very different from one site to another, the performances being able to vary the simple one with the double of the center of the basin towards the exit on the ocean. It is during the summer and of the autumn that the difference is established between the sectors, the spring growths being similar. The hierarchy observed is associated a more or less great precocity of the laying. - A gradient influences continental oceanic-influence is observed, resulting in more...

Maurer, Daniele; Comps, Michel; His, Edouard.
Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. The influence of external (temperature, available food) and internai factors (length, maturation, spawning) on this phenomenon is discussed. A comparaison is drawn with...

His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Rene.

Coastal phytoplankton community dynamics and coexistence driven by intragroup density-dependence, light and hydrodynamics ArchiMer
Barraquand, F.; Picoche, C.; Maurer, Daniele; Carassou, L.; Auby, Isabelle.
Phytoplanktonic communities maintain a high diversity in a seemingly homogeneous environment, competing for the same set of resources. Many theories have been proposed to explain this coexistence despite likely competition, such as contrasted responses to temporal environmental variation. However, theory has developed at a faster pace than empirical evaluation using field data, which requires inferring drivers of community dynamics from observational time series. Here, we combine autoregressive models with a data set spanning more than 20 years of phytoplankton counts every two weeks, together with nutrients and physical variables. By comparing models dominated by nutrients or physical variables (hydrodynamics and climate), we first explore which abiotic...
