Growing systems for quality baking wheat: the effects of catch crops on yield and nitrate leaching Organic Eprints
Mauscherning, Inken; Loges, Ralf; Pedersen, Lene; Taube, Friedhelm.
In maritime climates the production of winter wheat often leads to high nitrate leaching losses. In this study mixtures of winter wheat and catch crops were analyzed as alternative growing system to avoid high leaching losses. In a field experiment pure winter wheat grown as control showed highest N-losses. Leaching losses of 140 kg N ha-1 after the pre-crop grass-clover and of 50 kg N ha-1 after oats as pre-crop were measured. Compared to this, growing winter wheat in mixture with forage rape or oats reduced nitrate leaching by 50 %. Common vetch as mixture partner to winter wheat had a lower potential to reduce leaching losses. Comparable results were obtained growing the catch crops alone followed by spring wheat. Due to the competition for growth...

Beisaat von Zwischenfrüchten als Möglichkeit zur Reduzierung der N-Auswaschung in Wintergetreide? Organic Eprints
Loges, Dr. Ralf; Mauscherning, Inken; Taube, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm.
In a field experiment the potential of mixtures of winter cereals and catch crops to reduce nitrate leaching was investigated. Pure winter wheat showed the highest N-losses (56 kg N ha-1). Compared to a control without a catch crop, winter rye and oilseed radish grown in pure stand or in mixture with a winter cereal reduced nitrate-leaching by 30 to 80 %. However, common vetch had a significant lower potential compared to the tested non-legume catch crops. Further investigations are needed to optimize the system with special regards to the concurrence between cereal and catch crop in autumn and in early spring.

Effekte der Umstellung auf ökologischen Landbau auf die Segetalflora zweier Ackerbaubetriebe in Schleswig-Holstein Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Geweke, Oliver; Mauscherning, Inken; Schütz, Wolfgang; Loges, Ralf; Roweck, Hartmut; Taube, Friedhelm.
On two farms in Northern Germany the number of weed species in arable fields was about twice as large three to five years after conversion to organic agriculture compared with the last year of conventional cropping. Results indicate positive effects of organic farming on the weed flora although rare species are still lacking to date.

Autumn sown catch crop understoreys as strategy to reduce nitrate leaching in winter cereals Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Mauscherning, Inken; Taube, Friedhelm.
Under conditions with wet mild winters due to high nitrate leaching risk growing systems with high nitrogen (N) uptake efficiency in autumn are necessary, especially after pre crops with a high N release. In 2003 and 2004 a field trial was conducted in Northern Germany to investigate autumn N uptake and nitrate leaching in autumn sown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) grown intercropped with catch crops. Catch crops in pure stands were sown as control. In each system three catch crops common vetch (Vicia sativa), forage rape (Brassica napus) and oats (Avena sativa) were tested simultaneously. The experiment was run parallel after grass clover (high N status) and oats (low N status). N uptake, soil mineral nitrogen...
