This paper explores two sets of issues. The first concerns the magnitude of policy induced distortions in developing countries and the impact of these distortions on the economy, paying special attention to differential impacts between firms of different sizes and resulting effects on the level of employment. The second concerns the prior experience of donors and the LDC governments with the process of policy change.

Subcontracting Systems and Assistance Programs: Opportunities for Intervention AgEcon

Because of the role which parent firms can play in identifying recipients, in specifying the nature of the assistance needed and in providing some required functions directly themselves in tandem with the activities supported by the aid program, subcontracting systems can provide a particularly cost-effective way of supplying aid to small producers.

Sub-Contracting in Rural Areas of Thailand AgEcon

This paper describes an arrangement where a producer undertakes certain steps in the production process done by individuals working in their own homes in Thailand. The paper also provides a description of how this system operates in four different industries, presents survey data on people engaged in subcontracting work, evaluates the subcontracting system, and determines the advantages and disadvantages of its operation.

This paper discusses small enterprises in Egypt to determine the number of firms, levels of employment, and basic enterprise characteristics by industry group; to examine a sample of firms in selected industries to determine production and distribution patterns, economic viability, constraints, and potential for future growth; and to suggest to the Egyptian government and USAID the type of policies, programs, and projects that might support development of small enterprises.

This paper is concerned with the conduct of meaningful policy and project relevant research on small enterprise development. It responds to a growing demand for operationally useful small enterprise research, a demand which has surged over the past ten years in the wake of increasing concern with equity issues coupled with recent evidence on small enterprise efficiency.
