The intertidal fauna of a Belgian sandy beach was sampled on an hourly basis with a hand-pushed sledge to study circadiel patterns in species composition. Four assemblages could be distinguished with classification and ordination techniques. A first division separated the samples taken during daytime from the night samples. Both assemblages were subsequently divided into an ebbtide and a floodtide situation. Light intensity and tidal height were the most important variables explaining the variation in the Canonical Correspondence Analysis. |

Monthly sampling with a sledge type gear at 24 stations in the shallow coastal area in front of the Dutch Delta (southern bight of the North Sea) shows that high densities of a variety of animals are present in the lower 1 m of the water column: the hyperbenthos. Hyperbenthic community structure is strongly dominated by seasonal fluctuations due to the sequential appearance, high abundance and disappearance of the different species of temporary hyperbenthos. In winter and early spring, when the community is dominated by its permanent residents, spatial patterns emerge. Averaged over the year, these spatial patterns are consistent with the hydrodynamic regime in the system. Sedimentation of silt occurs in the same sheltered areas where the highest biomass... |

The Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas) and P. lozanoi (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of P. minutus increased while in P. lozanoi the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of P. lozanoi was significantly higher than that of P.... |

Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37... |

The hyperbenthic mysids and euphausiids of the subtidal shallow coastal waters (the Voordelta) and the Westerschelde estuary in the Delta area (SW Netherlands) were regularly sampled between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marshes in the brackish part of the estuary were studied in the same period. Eight mysid species and one euphausiid species were identified. The spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of all species are described. The most abundant species in the coastal area is Schistomysis spiritus, followed by Mesopodopsis slabberi, Schistomysis kervillei, and Gastrosaccus spinifer. In the marine part of the Westerschelde the same four species are dominant but densities are generally higher in the... |

Within the timespan of a few decades, the harbour seal almost completely disappeared from the estuaries in the south-west of the Netherlands. In 1960 a population of around 350 animals still lived in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde area. About a quarter of this population lived in the Oosterschelde. At present less than 17 animals can be regularly observed in the whole area. Human influences are responsible for the rapid decline of the population. Initially the high hunting pressure and later environmental pollution are the main causes. Loss of habitat and disturbance at the resting places are additional important factors. The Oosterschelde still is a suitable habitat for seals. A short term natural development of a viable population in the area is not... |

A first assessment of the ecological importance of the hyperbenthic fauna in coastal and estuarine systems was made in December 1988 in a pilot study (41 stations) covering the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde estuaries, and part of the neighbouring shallow coastal area, the Voordelta. Multivariate analysis revealed three major gradients which could be divided into seven spatially defined hyperbenthic communities. Canonical Correspondence Analysis was applied to correlate these species assemblages with a number of environmental variables measured at each station. Species distributions in the Westerschelde appear to be primarily determined by a gradient involving salinity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen. Hyperbenthic animals, mainly the mysid... |
