| ABSTRACTRabies virus (RABV) isolated from different mammals seems to have unique characteristics that influence the outcome of infection. RABV circulates in nature and is maintained by reservoirs that are responsible for the persistence of the disease for almost 4000 years. | ABSTRACTWe have evaluated the efficacy of short-interfering RNAs targeting the nucleoprotein gene and also the brain immune response in treated and non-treated infected mice. Mice were inoculated with wild-type virus, classified as dog (hv2) or vampire bat (hv3) variants and both groups were treated or leaved as controls. No difference was observed in the lethality rate between treated and non-treated groups, although clinical evaluation of hv2 infected mice showed differences in the severity of clinical disease (p = 0.0006). | Foram avaliados 304 cães de ambiente rural e urbano do município de Monte Negro, Rondônia, através do Antígeno Acidificado Tamponado (AAT), Soroaglutinação Lenta em Tubos (SAL) e 2-Mercaptoetanol (2-ME) para a pesquisa de anticorpos anti-Brucella abortus e da Imunodifusão em gel de ágar (IDGA) e Imunodifusão em gel de ágar com soro tratado com 2-Mercaptoetanol (IDGA-ME) para Brucella canis. Foram consideradas positivas as amostras reagentes nas provas confirmatórias do 2-ME e IDGA-ME. Verificaram-se 56 (18,4%) animais reagentes ao AAT e 12 (4,0%) reagentes a SAL. | ABSTRACT: From May to September 2011, a total of 138 wild rodents of the Cricetidae family were collected in the cities of Anhembi, Bofete and Torre de Pedra, in São Paulo State. All animals were examined for the presence of ticks, which were collected and identified at species level in the laboratory by morphological examination (for adults, nymphs and larvae) and molecular biology, by sequencing of a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial rDNA (for larvae). | Em 81 cães com sinais clínicos, lesões histológicas e corpúsculos de inclusão no sistema nervoso central característicos de cinomose nervosa foi constatada ocorrência freqüente de: alteração das reações posturais (87,65%), diminuição da secreção lacrimal (83,95%), presença de mioclonias (75,30%), paresias (69,12%), conjuntivite (56,79%), corioretinite/ hiperqueratose naso-digital (51,85%), linfopenia (51,85%), anemia (48,05%), principalmente microcítica hipocrômica, e discretas alterações liquóricas caracterizadas por aumento de proteínas totais (77,33%) e pleocitose linfocítica (50,72%).
