The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands-Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the... |

The tidal marshes along the Scheldt estuary are rather unique in Europe, because they still exist along the complete salinity gradient. Key ecological factors for the vegetation are salinity, tidal regime and current and historical management. A general portrait with the most characterising plant species as well as a succession scheme are presented for salt, brackish and fresh tidal marshes separately, because they have few plant species and vegetation types in common. Tidal regime changes as a combined effect of sea level rise and the channel deepening in the Westerscheldt. This affects the marsh vegetation. Biodiversity patterns and factors affecting the distribution of species on the tidal marshes are discussed for plants, gastropodes, arthropodes and... |

In October 1994, 39 macrobenthic samples, divided between two areas, were taken on the western Belgian Coastal Banks. The two areas could not be clearly divided, concerning their macrobenthic communities. Multivariate techniques revealed five coherent communities, linked with typical sedimentological factors: (1) the Barnea candida community in a very compact muddy sediment (median 14 µm); (2) a second community characterized by the presence of spat of Mytilus edulis, With a medium sandy sediment (median 456 µm); (3) the Lanice conchilega community inhabiting a fine sandy sediment (median 211 µm); (4) the Nephtys cirrosa-Echinocardium cordatum community in a coarser fine sandy... |

The Scheldt estuary is a vast ecosystem in which powerful natural forces prevail. Tidal action is a key element in the functioning of the estuary. The combination of tide and discharge results in a salinity gradient that is characterized by strong variations in the brackish part. The estuary is a highly turbidsystem. The load of suspended solids is determined by acomplex mix of factors. The dynamic interactions of the physicochemical and morphological parameters lead to a range of various habitats, with highly fluctuating conditions. This, together with the very heavy human impact, both morphological and chemical makes the estuary a very stressed environment in which the survival of plants and animals requires special adaptations. |

The Schelde estuary, with its tidal flats and marshes along an uninterrupted salinity gradient from a marine to a fresh water system, is almost unique in Europe. On top of its important contributions towards national and international biodiversity it performs multiple socio-economic functions of vital importance. To combine all these functions in a sustainable way an integrated management is needed, based on the comprehension of its functioning and aimed at an optimal tuning of all processes and functions involved. With this report we hope to initiate a productive dialogue, one step ahead towards the integrated management of the Schelde estuary. It forms part of an agreement between the Administration of Waterways and Water infrastructure and some Flemish... |

The Scheldt estuary is exposed to large loads of carbon and nutrients. This leads to a eutrophication problem characterized by reduced oxygen concentrations and a huge efflux of CO2. In the coastal waters a degradation of the foodchain is noted caused by excessive nutrient supply. The capacity of the estuary to polish the water is important but can not cope with the vast scale of the immissions. Restoration and development of tidal wetlands can contribute in several ways to restore the water quality. Increase of water treatment is expected to have positive ecological results. Nevertheless, restoration of the oxygen conditions might counteract some purifying processes. |
