Aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera (Insecta) from Pitinga, Amazonas, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Pereira,Domingos L. V.; Melo,Alan Lane de.
A list of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera from a collecting trip to Pitinga, a village in a mining area in the County of Presidente Figueiredo in the Central Amazon is presented. Identified were fifty five species of Heteroptera, distributed in 13 families. Among the insects collected, some are new records for this Amazonian region and in addition 3 apparently undescribed species of Microvelia and one of Paravelia remain for further study.

Metacercariae of Eumegacetes medioximus (Digenea: Eumegacetidae) in larvae of Odonata from Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pinto,Hudson Alves; Melo,Alan Lane de.
During studies on the participation of larval Odonata in the life cycle of trematodes carried out at the Pampulha reservoir, Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between May and September 2011, dragonfly larvae, Orthemis discolor (Burmeister, 1839) and Perithemis mooma Kirby, 1889, were found harboring metacercariae identified as Eumegacetes medioximusBraun, 1901. This is the first report and morphological description of metacercariae of E. medioximus in the Neotropical region.

Predicting the distribution of Omalonyx (Mollusca: Pulmonata: Succineidae) species from literature review, museum databases and new sampling efforts in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Coscarelli,Daniel; Montresor,Lângia C.; Russo,Philip; Melo,Alan Lane de; Vidigal,Teofânia H.D.A..
Abstract Accurate distributional information is crucial for studies on systematics, biodiversity and conservation. To improve the knowledge regarding the geographical distribution of Omalonyx in South America, we present updated information based on data from a literature review, institutional collections and malacological surveys. All this information composed the dataset used to predict species distribution employing the Maximum Entropy Algorithm (MaxEnt). The model was run using data on species distribution, altitude and bioclimatic variables (WorldClim database). The model had consistent performance, and areas presenting similar conditions to areas where the species were recorded were considered areas of occurrence. The predicted occurrence areas...

New records and checklist of aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera: Gerromorpha and Nepomorpha) from the Southern region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Floriano,Carla Fernanda Burguez; Oliveira,Iana Aparecida Dalla Valle; Melo,Alan Lane de.
A list of aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera species from the southern region of Mato Grosso do Sul State is presented. The material was collected between 2008 and 2009. Samples were obtained from 10 streams (Água Boa, Cerro Verde, Cumprida, Ponte, Doradão, Guaçú, Guaporites, Nhu-Verá, Perobão and Santa Maria), one river (Iguatemi River) and nine ponds (Bacal, Balan, Ponte, Cinco, Macrófitas, Bugão, Sítio, Cascalho, and Oxbow). A total of 63 aquatic and semi-aquatic species of Heteroptera were recorded, of which 32 are new records.

Effect of ivermectin on the life cycle and larval fat body of Culex quinquefasciatus BABT
Alves,Stenio Nunes; Serrão,José Eduardo; Mocelin,Giovani; Melo,Alan Lane de.
The present work investigated the behavior, survival rate and lethal effect of 1.5 ppb ivermectin on Culex quinquefasciatus larvae, based on morphological and biological parameters, and possible alterations of their fat body. Changes in the number of eggs/egg mass and length of the larval stage were investigated. For this experiment, 600 larvae of 3rd and 4th instars of the mosquito were tested. The laid eggs were separated and the hatched larvae were counted. Some larvae submitted to 1.5 ppb ivermectin solution were used to prepare samples for histological study. Results obtained showed that ivermectin in a concentration of 1.5 ppb caused paralysis to the larvae with a mortality rate of 73.38%, mobilization of substances stored in the fat body and...
