The Culture of Private Negotiation: Price Drift in Bilateral Bargaining AgEcon
Phillips, Owen R.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
The culture of private negotiation leads parties to agreements below a price that anchors beginning bids and offers. Possible anchors are a list price or suggested retail price. The anchor may be endogenous, e.g., the average reported trade price from previous trading activity. An endogenous anchor may cause a downward or upward drift in negotiated prices. Using bilateral bargaining data from laboratory experimental markets, this paper demonstrates how price information reports create drifts in negotiated prices. A downward drift is robust and causes sharp declines in total market surplus. Also, relative earnings are distributed toward buyers and away from sellers.

ALTERNATIVE PARAMETER SPECIFICATION IN E, V ANALYSIS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FARM LEVEL DECISION MAKING AgEcon
Adams, Richard M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Woolery, Bruce A..
This study compares the structure of E, V frontiers under several specifications of expected income and variance parameters with emphasis on fundamental differences in efficient crop mixes. The results are generated using data from a specific production region and a selected set of cropping activities for Wyoming. The risk-efficient frontiers and underlying crop mixes display sensitivity to alternative parameter definitions and suggest that if researchers intend to use the E, V approach in providing decision information to producers, care should be exercised in the choice of income and risk measures.

Unilateral and Exclusionary/Strategic Effects of Common Agency: Price Impacts in a Repeated Common Value English Auction AgEcon
Coatney, Kalyn T.; Shaffer, Sherrill L.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Scheer, Jennifer L..
The business justification for multiple principals to hire a common agent is efficiency. Our empirical study demonstrates that the creation of the common agent unilaterally depresses winning bids. Additionally, the common agent was not only observed to be the dominant bidder but also paid significantly lower prices than fringe competitors (price/quantity differential). The observed price/quantity differential is consistent with the almost common value English auction theory developed by Rose and Kagel (2008) in which a cost advantaged bidder is able to reduce competition by credibly raising the costs of disadvantaged rivals associated with the winner’s curse.

IMPACT OF CHANGING CONSUMER PREFERENCES ON WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR BEEF STEAKS IN ALTERNATIVE RETAIL PACKAGING AgEcon
Schmitz, John D.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Whipple, Glen D.; Hoffman, Elizabeth; Field, Ray A..
The purpose of this study was to identify how consumer perceptions of selected attributes of beef steaks, individual consumer demographics and perceived changes in purchases of substitute meats affect willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks in the traditional overwrapped styrofoam tray and vacuum skin packages. A laboratory auction was used to obtain willingness-to-pay data. The results suggest that health related factors, particularly the concern regarding cholesterol, reduced the willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks, regardless of package type. For the vacuum skin package to be successful, information about the package is necessary, along with providing a consistent and quality product, particularly with respect to trim.

Subsidy Incidence in Agricultural Land Markets: An Experimental Investigation AgEcon
Nagler, Amy M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Ehmke, Mariah D..
We use laboratory market experiments to control for market power and social norms in order to evaluate market outcomes associated with subsidy incidence. We estimate the incidence of a stylized agricultural subsidy in laboratory land rental negotiations and compare the market behavior of university students to agricultural professionals. In separate sessions with both subject groups, 21.5 percent of a per-unit subsidy paid to the buyer (tenant) was passed on to sellers (landlords). The consistent treatment effect between students and professionals is encouraging, particularly in the use of experimental laboratory methods for ex ante analyses of agricultural policy impacts.

FORWARD CONTRACT INFORMATION IMPACTS ON PRICING AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCIES IN A SIMULATED FED CATTLE MARKET AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Koontz, Stephen R.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
As policy makers strive to maintain competitiveness in agricultural markets, the impacts of altering market information sets must be evaluated. An experiment was designed to assess the price and production impacts of forward contract information. Results suggest that this information reduced price level and dispersion. Production efficiency was improved in the spot market.

WILL MANDATORY PRICE REPORTING IMPROVE PRICING AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY IN AN EXPERIMENTAL MARKET FOR FED CATTLE? AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Koontz, Stephen R.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
Mandatory price reporting legislation will make available to the public on a weekly basis information on terms of trade for forward contracts. The new information will provide marketing intentions details that were previously unavailable to agents in the fed cattle market. An experiment was designed to assess the potential impacts of this new information on price discovery and production efficiency. Results suggest that the proposed new information will reduce price level, reduce price dispersion, and improve production efficiency. Prices may be reduced as information risks are reduced for both buyers and sellers in the fed cattle market. This result may not be popular among sellers in the market.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND RISKS IN FORWARD AND SPOT MARKETS: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Phillips, Owen R.; O'Neill, Patrick D..
Laboratory methods are used to investigate the impacts of supply and/or demand risks on prices, quantities traded, and earnings within forward and spot market institutions. Results suggest that the spot or forward trading institution itself has a greater influence on market outcomes than supply/demand risks within the institution.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SUPPORT FOR RURAL LAND USE CONTROL : A REPLY AgEcon
McLeod, Donald M.; Woirhaye, Jody; Menkhaus, Dale J..
The comment indicated that landed wealth (acres owned) should be included as an explanatory variable in the zoning referendum estimation. Land can be constructed as an indicator of wealth that may be impacted by land use controls. The reply focuses on study site issues as well as theoretic, empirical, and institutional/social considerations. Responses to land use control referenda depend on the land considered, attitudes toward land use planning and socio-demographic factors, including income. The amount of acres owned was not statistically significant in explaining preferences for land use controls in the case investigated by McLeod, Woirhaye and Menkhaus.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND RISKS IN LABORATORY FORWARD AND SPOT MARKETS: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Phillips, Owen R.; O'Neill, Patrick D..
Laboratory experimental methods are used to investigate the impacts of supply and/or demand risks on prices, quantities traded, and earnings within forward and spot market institutions. Random demand and/or supply shifts can be as much as 25 percent of the expected equilibrium outcome. Nevertheless, results suggest that the spot or forward trading institution itself has a greater influence on market outcomes than the presence of risk within the trading institutions. Sellers tend to have relatively higher earnings in a spot market than buyers, regardless of the risk. Total surplus, however, generally is greater in a forward market.

RUSSIAN FOOD SYSTEM IN TRANSITION AgEcon
Yakunina, Alla V.; Esipov, Victor E.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T..
The evolution of vertical coordination systems and pricing mechanisms in the Russian food system are summarized. The activities in the stages of the food vertical chain during the command economy period were coordinated administratively similar to an integrated firm. Coordination in the food chain has evolved from mostly vertical expansion through quasi integration to mostly vertical mergers, as the Russian economy has started to move toward a more market oriented system. The unique characteristics of the exchange system and the structural nature of agriculture in the potential importing country are important considerations to take into account by exporting agribusiness firms.

FORECASTING PRICE MOVEMENTS: AN APPLICATION OF DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Adams, Richard M..
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a technique, discriminant analysis, which may be useful in predicting the direction of movement between fall feeder calf prices and spring yearling prices. The results of the discriminant analysis model are then compared with a conventional regression approach in terms of relative accuracy of predictions. The usefulness of incorporating the direction of price movement as a variable in a price prediction model is also evaluated. Generally, the results suggest that the discriminant analysis approach provides useful information, and the directional variable improves forecasts when incorporated into a traditional forecasting model.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SUPPORT FOR RURAL LAND USE CONTROL: A CASE STUDY AgEcon
McLeod, Donald M.; Woirhaye, Jody; Menkhaus, Dale J..
Agricultural land is being converted into rural residences at an unprecedented rate in the Inter-mountain West. Survey data have been collected for Sublette County, Wyoming concerning preferences for private land use and land use control. Selected land use controls include zoning, purchase of development rights and cluster development. Local in-migration appears to be driven by the pursuit of open space and environment amenities. Logit models are estimated for public and private choice co-variates. Private concerns about land use are the chief determinants of land use control approval.
