The Impact of Biotech Corn Traits on Ethanol Production AgEcon
Kalaitzandonakes, Nicholas G.; Kaufman, James; Meyer, Seth D.; Thompson, Wyatt.
The U.S. appears committed to the ongoing use of ethanol biofuels. In order to realize the desired benefits, ethanol production must continue to become more efficient. Although many technologies have emerged to improve efficiency this article focuses on the role that corn biotechnology might play. Biotechnology offers the potential to increase yields and lower input use as well as aid the conversion of corn to ethanol. This could have a meaningful impact on the energy balance and greenhouse gas emissions of ethanol production. This article finds those impacts to be significant, although likely to be eclipsed by cellulosic biofuels. However, the realization of any such benefits is conditioned by prevailing market and policy conditions. In a world where the...

Potential for Uncertainty about Indirect Effects of Ethanol on Land Use in the Case of Brazil AgEcon
Thompson, Wyatt; Meyer, Seth D.; Westhoff, Patrick C..
The indirect effects of ethanol on land are a focus of recent US biofuel literature and policy. The experiments presented here highlight the sensitivity of land use changes to assumptions about the ability of land to be converted from one use to another and the ease with which decision makers can make these conversions. By varying parameters governing land use in a simulation model, indirect effects on land use can be varied no less widely. Extending this result, there is an inverse relationship between the responsiveness of land allocation, which is a key element of overall supply response in the medium-term, and the magnitude of price effects: for a given shock, greater land response dampens the scale of price changes and lower land response is...

Chinese Synthetic Fiber Capacity and its Impacts on Natural Fiber Markets AgEcon
Meyer, Seth D.; Meyers, William H..
Chinese synthetic fiber capacity is more than 100 times larger than it was just 30 years ago. It represents more capacity than exists in the United States and Western Europe combined and continues to expand each year to serve the growing Chinese textile industry. Historically, the Chinese government has provided support to the synthetic fiber industry and encouraged its expansion. At the same time, petroleum consumption in China continues to expand, and China is now the second largest petroleum consumer in the world. As a byproduct of petroleum distillation, the feeder materials for synthetic fiber production are readily available in the marketplace. In the presence of inter-fiber competition, the large amount of synthetic production capacity may have...

Purchasing Patterns of Hog Producers: Implications for Rural Agribusiness AgEcon
Lawrence, John D.; Otto, Daniel M.; Meyer, Seth D..
The consolidation of pork production into fewer and larger operations has implications for rural agribusiness that have traditionally serviced producers. This study examines purchasing patterns of existing pork producers for production inputs by size of operation. Distance traveled to purchase inputs and reasons for bypassing the nearest supplier are evaluated as are the characteristics to be competitive in the pork industry are those most likely to bypass the local supplier.
