Organizational resilience emphasizes the adaptive capacity for renewal after crisis. This paper explores the sustainability and resilience of a not-for-profit firm that claims to contribute to sustainable development of the food system. We used semi-structured interviews and Holling’s adaptive cycle as a heuristic device to assess what constitutes social and sustainable entrepreneurship in this case, and we discuss the determinants of organizational resilience. The business, Biodynamiska Produkter (BP), has experienced periods of growth, conservation and rapid decline in demand, followed by periods of re-organization. Our results suggest that BP, with its social mission and focus on organic food, meets the criteria of both a social and sustainability... |

In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and... |

Ekolådan (EL) is a vegetable and fruit box-scheme run by Stiftelsen Biodynamiska Produkter (SBP) at Järna (40 km southwest of Stockholm), a non-profit foundation aimed at “providing consumers with organic and biodynamic food of high quality, in a way that gives growers the possibility to continue to develop” (Ekolådan, 2014a). EL was started by SBP as a project in 2002 and the first boxes were delivered in autumn 2003. The boxes delivered by EL contain only organic or biodynamic produce, and SBP is a fully organically certified business. In spring 2014 approximately 2,600 boxes were delivered to consumers (including workplaces) every week, and this number was the same in January 2015. The overall value chain is comprised of the farmers delivering fruit and... |

Upplandsbondens (UB) is a farmer owned cooperative that was established in 2006. There are approximately 100 members. All members are organically certified meat-producing farmers (beef, mutton, pork) in the county of Uppland, Sweden (figure 1). UB is certified according to the organic certification KRAV, the Swedish organic standard, which is somewhat harsher on e.g. animal husbandry than the EU organic regulation. The overall value chain in which the bulk of the meat is channelled is comprised of the farmers, the UB cooperative (in which only farmers are members), slaughterhouses, meat wholesalers, retail shops and consumers. UB negotiates prices and looks for market solutions for its members. Market partners have changed throughout the years. The largest... |

This paper aims to explore farmers' conditions, strategies and performances in a context of multi-dimensional policy requirements, market imperfections and globalisation. The basic assumption sees conditions as drivers for farmers’ strategies that then result in performances of the sector. The methodological approach is based on the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) model which is used for the analysis of three case studies. The model helps to identify changes in framework conditions over time, resources among relevant groups of primary producers, adaptation strategies and finally, to explore the related social, economic and environmental effects. The analysis is based on three case studies, three farmers’ groups in Germany and Sweden. Results show... |

Values-based food chains link farmers, processors, wholesale and retail traders in a way that the end-consumer receives a product with additional quality attributes such as regionality, fair trade, high animal welfare or nature conservation standards. The transmission of such additional values which are beyond general food standards requires chain specific objectives and well-targeted management strategies. Results show that all studied businesses/initiatives have consistent business logics for their internal organisation and cooperation and communication in the specific chain. The business logic ensures the effective value transmission based on e.g. controlling and information measures. |

It is clear that the industrialised food system is in need of a transformation into something less environmentally and socially destructive and less vulnerable to scarcity of non-renewable resources. While there are alternatives, there are very few examples of alternative/organic/localised/civic food systems that have been able to grow out of their niche and make a substantial difference. The examples that are available can tell us a lot about what it takes to create new models within the hegemonic food system and about what is needed for such food chains to develop and maintain momentum. Using some key notions in resilience thinking, this paper explores the adaptive capacity of organic food value chains from 10 European countries that have been able to... |

The present context of a compounded environmental, climate and socio-economic crisis points to a need for transitions towards a more resilient society. In short, resilience involves the capacity to cope with change through adaptation, continual development and renewal. Transitions to resilience are needed not least within the global food system, which has failed to meet core sustainability challenges in terms of reducing environmental, climate and social destruction. Organic food value chains are among the emerging alternatives to the hegemonic food system. However, there are few examples of such chains that have expanded substantially beyond their niches, without becoming incorporated into the mainstream food system. This paper discusses two cases of... |

Learning, diversity, trust and social networks are key aspects of adaptive capacity and thus for building resilience (Walker et al., 2004; Milestad et al., 2010). The organic value chains explored in HG were able to overcome challenges and grow into mid-scale initiatives because they had adaptive capacity. Thus, they were willing to learn and took the opportunities to learn in order to adjust activities. They used diversity as a strategy to spread risks and to keep options open. Trusting relationships and long-term partnerships with market partners and other actors was strived for and accomplished with extensive social networks. Coupled with professionalization of business and value management, as well as using available market partners to their advantage,... |
