Among other applications, self-feeding has been used to study food preferences in fish allowing them to choose between feeders with different food content. Preference tests assume that (i) trigger actuations are motivated by appetite, (ii) fish can learn which feeder contains which food and discriminate between feeders solely on the basis of their content, and (iii) in groups of fish, the triggering preferences is representative for the individuals of the group. We studied individual triggering behaviour in four groups of 14 Atlantic cod (length of 34 +/- 2 cm, weight of 424 +/- 102 g, mean +/- SE, water temperature comprised between 7-8 degrees C) that were first given the choice between two self-feeders with identical content (Period 1 of 14 days) and... |

The occurrence of emotions in non-human animals has been the focus of debate over the years. Recently, an interest in expanding this debate to non-tetrapod vertebrates and to invertebrates has emerged. Within vertebrates, the study of emotion in teleosts is particularly interesting since they represent a divergent evolutionary radiation from that of tetrapods, and thus they provide an insight into the evolution of the biological mechanisms of emotion. We report that Sea Bream exposed to stimuli that vary according to valence (positive, negative) and salience (predictable, unpredictable) exhibit different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states. Since according to the dimensional theory of emotion valence and salience define a two-dimensional... |

Differences in bold and shy personality on sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were investigated between a population (wild) produced from wild-brood fish and a population (selected) produced from selected-brood fish. During the experiment (112 days), fish were reared under self-feeding condition to characterize the feeding behaviour of each individual fish. Three risk-taking tests (T1, T2 and T3 of 24 h with day-night alternation) were carried out at > 1 month intervals on 180 fish of each strain in order to monitor D. labrax behaviour over time and in relation to the light:dark period. A risk-taking score was evaluated via a preference choice between a safe zone (without food) and a risky zone (potentially with food) by recording the number and the duration... |

Among other strategies to improve fish welfare in rearing environment, domestication and/or selective breeding was proposed to minimize fish responsiveness to husbandry practices. To verify this hypothesis on a recently domesticated specie, the sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, L., an experiment was realized, using four populations differing according to their level of domestication or selection: one population produced from wild parents (Wild), one population produced from parents domesticated for one generation (Domesticated) and two produced from parents selected for growth for one generation (Selected A and Selected B). The experiment was carried out over 91 days with 600 fish (50 fish per tank, 150 fish per population). After a control period, the fish... |

The long term influence of individual biological rhythms on group feed demand behaviour was investigated in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) held under controlled environmental conditions with an on-demand feeding system. The experiment was realized over 219 days with 190 fish distributed on 4 tanks. Sea bass had a mean body mass comprised between 139 g to 183 g. The number of feed demand acts by each individual was calculated daily, and the population could thus be partitioned into three categories (high-, low-and zero-triggering fish). The duration of the period that an individual held high-triggering status could vary, but was 63 +/- 16 days on average. The transition period between two highest-triggering fish in one tank was on average 4 +/- 4... |

Reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) represent 13% of the economic weight of the Mediterranean aquaculture production (FAO, 2005) and is a subject of selection program. However, the traditional goal of selection that prevailed in the last century, i.e. increasing productivity, have to be modulated by new objectives such as better feed management or increasing fish welfare. The aim of our study is to evaluate the influence of domestication and selection, and their interactions with stress, on the energy balance in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Therefore, we used two experimental datasets and analysed their results through a mathematical model. Four strains of sea bass were studied: i) Wild strain, ii) Domesticated strain (first generation obtained by... |

Spontaneous swimming activity of 0-group common sole (Solea solea) was evaluated using a video-tracking system under laboratory conditions. An experiment was conducted during two consecutive days on individuals sampled in June, July, September and November (2004) in a coastal nursery ground (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). The measured behavioural variables were: distance travelled and frequency of occurrence of burying, swimming and immobility. 0-group sole showed a relatively clear circadian activity in line with the artificial light conditions (day, twilight and night). Swimming activity of 0-group sole decreased drastically from June to July, thereafter remaining at a very low level in September and November. Such important changes reflect... |

Adaptive phenotypic plasticity is a key component of the ability of organisms to cope with changing environmental conditions. Fish have been shown to exhibit a substantial level of phenotypic plasticity in response to abiotic and biotic factors. In the present study, we investigate the link between environmental sensitivity assessed globally (revealed by phenotypic variation in body weight) and more targeted physiological and behavioral indicators that are generally used to assess the sensitivity of a fish to environmental stressors. We took advantage of original biological material, the rainbow trout isogenic lines, which allowed the disentangling of the genetic and environmental parts of the phenotypic variance. Ten lines were characterized for the... |

Individual differences in behaviour and physiological responses to stress are associated with evolutionary adaptive variation and thus raw material for evolution. In farmed animals, the interest in consistent trait associations, i.e. coping styles, has increased dramatically over the last years. However, one of limitations of the available knowledge, regarding the temporal consistency, is that it refers always to short-term consistency (usually few weeks). The present study used an escape response during a net restraining test, previously shown to be an indicative of coping styles in seabream, to investigate long-term consistency of coping styles both over time and during different life history stages. Results showed both short-term (14 days) consistency... |

This study describes how three individual fish, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), developed a novel behaviour and learnt to use a dorsally attached external tag to activate a self-feeder. This behaviour was repeated up to several hundred times, and over time these fish fine-tuned the behaviour and made a series of goal-directed coordinated movements needed to attach the feeder’s pull string to the tag and stretch the string until the feeder was activated. These observations demonstrate a capacity in cod to develop a novel behaviour utilizing an attached tag as a tool to achieve a goal. This may be seen as one of the very few observed examples of innovation and tool use in fish. |

Feeding motivation is one major indicator of fish welfare and an investigation on the link between feed demand, growth and physiological variables in sea bass juveniles was developed. A computerized on-demand feeding system coupled with a PIT tag monitoring device was used to continuously record for 219 days the triggering activity of 150 individuals (initial average body weight 131.6 +/- 1.80 g and coefficient of variation 16.8%). Each group was held in 400 1 tanks at 22.2 +/- 1.5 degrees C and light regime was 16:8 LD. In all the tanks, 89% of the fish actuated the trigger, but only two or three fish accounted for 45% of the total triggering activity. These few high-triggering individuals had a transient higher growth i.e. at the time an individual was... |

Individual differences in physiological and behavioural responses to stressors are increasingly recognised as adaptive variation and thus raw material for evolution and fish farming improvements including selective breeding. Such individual variation has been evolutionarily conserved and is present in all vertebrate taxa including fish. In farmed animals, the interest in consistent trait associations, that is coping styles, has increased dramatically over the last years because many studies have demonstrated links to performance traits, health and disease susceptibility and welfare. This study will review (i) the main behavioural, neuroendocrine, cognitive and emotional differences between reactive and proactive coping styles in farmed fish; (ii) the... |
