This study examined the influence of increasing temperatures in spring and summer on biochemical biomarkers in Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels sampled from Bizerte lagoon (northern Tunisia). Spatial and seasonal variations in a battery of seven biomarkers were analyzed in relation to environmental parameters (temperature, salinity and pH), physiological status (condition and gonad indexes), stress on stress (SoS) and chemical contaminant levels (heavy metals, PAHs and PCBs) in digestive glands. Integrated Biological Response (IBR) was calculated using seven biomarkers (AChE, BPH, MXR, GST, CAT, MDA and MT). Seasonal variations in biological response were determined during a critical period between spring and summer at two sites, where chemical... |

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) currently supports chemical and ecological monitoring programmes in order to achieve the good water surface status. Although chemical and ecological assessments are necessary, they have some limitations. Chemical approaches focus on certain substances identified as priorities, but they do not take into account other potentially harmful substances and also ignore the hazards related to contaminant cocktails. On the other hand, while ecological approaches provide holistic information on the impairment of biological communities in ecosystems, they do not distinguish the role of contaminants in these alterations, and consequently do not allow the establishment of contaminant impact reduction plans. Consequently,... |

The atm of this work was to find new non-specifie biomarkers to biomonitor the environmental impact of xénobiotics in marine organisms : the non-specifie esterase activity and the multixenobiotic resistance phenomena (MXR) similar to the multidrug resistance phenomena (MDR). As for the esterase activity, a simple and rapid method based on fluorescent measurements of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) has been developed with unicellular micro-algae : Calothrix sp. , Haslea ostrearia and Prorocentrum micans. This biomarker is very sensitive to many physical and chemical factors such as light intensity, temperature, salinity, stage of growth and, among the main marine pollutants, to organophosphates and, in a lesser extent, to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons... |

A 3-year survey was made of several biological markers in mussels (Mytilus edulis) exposed in situ to the oil that came ashore after the wreck of the "Erika" tanker on the Brittany (France) coast in December 1999. The mussel response was assessed using a set of 7 biomarkers, most of them related to the metabolism of organic contaminants. After a series of validation tests, data was evaluated for only 5 biomarkers: acety1cholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) adducts. No significant reductions in GST or CAT levels were observed, levels of DNA adducts and MDA were high during the 6 months immediately following the accident and levels of AChE were significantly lower during... |

The International workshop on Integrated Assessment of CONtaminants impacts on the North sea (ICON) provided a framework to validate the application of chemical and biological interpretation thresholds (BACs and EACs) in the Seine Bay in France. Bioassays (oyster larval anomalies, Corophium arenarium toxicity assay and DR Calux) for sediment and biomarkers: ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, lysosomal membrane stability (LMS), DNA strand breaks using the comet assay, DNA adducts, micronucleus (MN), PAH metabolites, intersex and fish external pathologies were analyzed in four marine sentinel species (Platichthys flesus, Limanda limanda, Mytilus sp. and Nucella lapilus). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons... |

Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is an invasive species that has proliferated in European and North American rivers and lakes during the last century. In this study, D. polymorpha has been used to provide information on contamination levels and biological effects in the Seine Estuary (France). The bivalves accumulated polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to a high degree with values reaching 800 ng/g dry weight for PCBs (sum of 20 congeners), and 1,000 ng/g dry weight of PAHs (sum of 14 compounds) in the whole body. These values are among the highest reported of PCBs and, to a lesser extent, of PAHs in other contaminated areas in the world. Toxic equivalent quantities of PCBs and PAHs detected in zebra mussels... |
