Cold stress at the booting stage in rice induces spikelet sterility because of aberrant microspore development, which often seriously damages seed production. Some breeding lines with high cold tolerance were developed by using tropical japonica variety Silewah as a donor of cold tolerance; however, the genetic factors that confer cold tolerance of this variety have not been comprehensively analyzed. In this study, phenotypic and molecular characterization of novel cold-tolerant strains derived from crosses with Silewah was performed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for cold tolerance. Molecular marker analysis revealed that 2 cold-tolerant strains carried chromosomal segments of Silewah at the same genomic regions on chromosomes 3, 4... |

White-grained wheat cultivars have long been recognized to be less resistant to preharvest sprouting (PHS) than the red-grained ones. Previously two QTLs for grain dormancy, QPhs.ocs-3A.1 (QPhs-3AS) and QPhs.ocs-4A.1 (QPhs-4AL) were identified in a highly dormant Japanese red wheat, Zenkoujikomugi (Zen). Aiming at improvement of PHS tolerance in white-grained wheat, the introgression effect of these two QTLs in a white-grained population consisting of 40 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from a cross between Zen and white-grained Spica was examined here. Random 20 RILs with red grains were also developed from the same cross and used as a control population. The RILs were grown in the field and in the glasshouse to evaluate the grain dormancy by... |

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is one of the serious problems for wheat production, especially in rainy regions. Although seed dormancy is the most critical trait for PHS resistance, the control of heading time should also be considered to prevent seed maturation during unfavorable conditions. In addition, awning is known to enhance water absorption by the spike, causing PHS. In this study, we conducted QTL analysis for three PHS resistant related traits, seed dormancy, heading time and awn length, by using recombinant inbred lines from 'Zenkouji-komugi' (high PHS resistance) x 'Chinese Spring' (weak PHS resistance). QTLs for seed dormancy were detected on chromosomes 1B (QDor-1B) and 4A (QDor-4A), in addition to a QTL on chromosome 3A, which was recently... |

This paper reports the results of a study of the relationship among the amylose content of flours and the physical properties, such as the texture, of yellow alkaline noodles (YAN) prepared from these flours. For this purpose, we used eight types of near-isogenic flours with different Wx protein deficiency under the Chinese Spring genetic background. With the use of the near-isogenic lines, it was possible to achieve similar flour characteristics, with the exception of the amylose content of starch in YAN, and to analyze clearly the effects of the amylose content on the physical properties of YAN. The results of this study indicated that the breaking force and breaking force/breaking deformation of YAN made from the eight lines basically decreased and that... |

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and the development of cultivars with FHB resistance is the most effective way to control the disease. Yumechikara is a Japanese hard red winter wheat cultivar that shows moderate resistance to FHB with superior bread-making quality. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for FHB resistance in Yumechikara, we evaluated doubled haploid lines derived from a cross between Yumechikara and a moderate susceptible cultivar, Kitahonami, for FHB resistance in a 5-year field trial, and we analyzed polymorphic molecular markers between the parents. Our analysis of these markers identified two FHB-resistance QTLs, one from Yumechikara and one from Kitahonami. The... |
