Anaerobic digestion of residual liquid effluent (brown juice) from a green biorefinery Organic Eprints
Martinez, EJ; Mirolucci, Federico; Gomez, X; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
This work studied the anaerobic digestion of brown juice, a liquid residual stream generated from biomass fractionation in a green biorefinery. Biomethane potential batch tests and inhibition studies of brown juice were performed during continuous processing in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. Prolongation of the lag phase in the batch tests with increasing substrate/inoculum ratio suggested initial inhibition, which was, however, overcome by adaptation. This was indicated by high final methane yields, which were close to the theoretical maximum of up to 500 L-CH4 kg-VS−1, achieved after 15 days for most of the set-ups. Reactor operation at the organic loading rate of 13.9 g-COD L−1 day−1 and hydraulic retention time of 3 days revealed methane...

Lactic acid fermentation for refining proteins from green crops and obtaining a high quality feed product for monogastric animals Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Kiel, Pauli; Steenfeldt, S.; Uellendahl, Hinrich; Lübeck, Mette.
Nowadays, the organic farming sector is growing at a fast pace in Europe while needs to face the lack of organic protein sources and in particular, feeding monogastric animals is becoming more and more urgent. Green biorefinery concepts might become the suitable solution for the sustainable production of organic protein-rich feeds from green crops. In this context, red clover, clover grass, alfalfa and oilseed radish were studied as possible feedstocks for the development of an organic biorefinery system in Northern Europe. For this purpose, the green crops were processed into a nitrogen-rich protein concentrate, a fiber-rich press cake, and a residual stream of soluble nutrients (brown juice). The process, which involved a novel protein refining technique...

Research report Organofinery protein extraction AAU Organic Eprints
Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Lübeck, Mette.
The supply of organic protein feed for monogastric animals (i.e. poultry and pigs) with the right amino acid profile and a competitive price is one of the major challenges for organic agriculture nowadays. In this project, the development of an organic protein concentrate able to substitute the soybean protein while competing with the current market prices is assessed. The product is developed from red clover biomass, using a sustainable technology without the use of inorganic acids or organic solvents. It also contains some lactic acid, which is supposed to be beneficial for the monogastric livestock. The quality of this protein concentrate is evaluated in terms of amino acid composition. The suitability of the obtained product as feedstock for poultry...

Biogas potential of green biomass after protein extraction in an organic biorefinery concept for feed, fuel and fertilizer production Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
The biogas potential of the residual fractions of four organically grown green crops after protein extraction was studied. The protein extraction method involved screw pressing of freshly harvested biomass to obtain a plant juice, followed by precipitation of the proteins. After protein extraction, 95% of organic matter was still present in the residual press cake and juice. Methane yields in the range of 219–375 and 429–539 ml-CH4 g-VS−1 were obtained for the mono-digestion of press cake and the residual juice, respectively, and up to 81% of the methane potential of the fresh crops was recovered in the two residual fractions when evaluated separately. Co-digestion of the press cake and the residual juice at the organic matter ratio at which those...

Proteins from organically grown green crops are promising poultry feed Organic Eprints
Lübeck, Mette; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fog, Erik; Kiel, Pauli.
The overall purpose of the OrganoFinery project is to provide solutions to these problems by developing a green biorefinery where the organic crops are at the same time used for animal feed, fertilizer and energy production (methane). One of the project´s aims is to identify crops suitable for organic arable farms that have a general need for nitrogen. Sufficient nitrogen supply is essential for the production of protein; therefore, legumes or mixed cropping with legumes are particularly interesting for organic farmers, since these crops fix nitrogen. In the bio-refining method, freshly harvested red clover and clover grass are mechanically separated into a green juice and a press cake using a screw press. Organic protein feed is produced by lactic acid...

Research report Organofinery biogas production AAU Organic Eprints
Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fernandez, Maria Santamaria; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
Organically grown red clover was investigated as a resource for organic feed by combination of protein extraction and anaerobic digestion of the sub-products. Extraction of proteins revealed a very favorable amino acid composition for the use as poultry feed. The residual 89% of organic matter, as solid press cake and brown juice was subjected to anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and fertilizer. Specific methane yields of 225±62 and 487±30 ml CH4/g VS were obtained for press cake and brown juice, respectively. No distinct inhibition was detected but adaptation of microorganisms in the case of the press cake and gradual increase of the substrate load in the case of the brown juice were beneficial to achieve efficient conversion of both fractions during...

Lübeck, Mette; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Fog, Erik; Kiel, Pauli.
