Our review concludes that organic standards need to account for a broader set of criteria in order to retain claims to ‘sustainability’. Measurements of the ecological, economic and social outcomes from over 96 kiwifruit, sheep/beef and dairy farms in New Zealand between 2004 and 2012 by The Agricultural Research Group on Sustainability (ARGOS) project showed some enhanced ecosystem services from organic agriculture that will assist a “land-sharing” approach for sustainable land management. However, the efficiency of provisioning services is reduced in organic systems and this potentially undermines a “land-sparing” strategy to secure food security and ecosystem services. Other aspects of the farm operation that are not considered in the organic standards... |

By 2050 human populations will reach 9 billion and 70% more food will be required. Increased agricultural production is already threatened by shortage of water, severe land degradation in existing agricultural landscapes, land-use intensification, invasive species, prospects of energy price hikes, loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services and climate change. This alignment of current and rapidly emerging problems represents a truly major set of coupled environmental, economic and social challenges for humanity . In order to develop better and more sustainable food systems, we need to make overall assessments of their effects based on multiple and varied criteria. Furthermore, if such overall multicriteria assessments are actually going to be used to... |

Global environmental degradation is linked to a worldwide erosion of ethnic identity and cultural diversity, as well as market disruption. Cultures rely heavily on the local environment around them, and local communities play a key role in conserving natural resources. People’s identity, connection with land, and the adaptation of Indigenous and local knowledge are prerequisites for resilience. Though the Environmental Precautionary Principle (EPP) aims to tackle environmental degradation by privileging the environment in the face of uncertainty, it is not sufficient on its own; it does not take into account the intimate connection between nature and local culture, nor does it prioritize community or cultural wellbeing. We suggest expanding this... |
