Are Geographical Indications a Worthy Quality Signal? A Framework on Protected Designation of Origin with Endogenous Quality Choice AgEcon
Desquilbet, Marion; Hassan, Daniel; Monier-Dilhan, Sylvette.
The paper provides a theoretical framework to analyze the welfare effects of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) labelling and of quality choices inside and outside the label on different types of consumers and producers, depending on whether quality is intrinsically linked to the territory of production or not.

Organic Food Consumption Patterns in France AgEcon
Hassan, Daniel; Monier-Dilhan, Sylvette; Nichele, Veronique; Simioni, Michel.
This research addresses two important issues for the future expansion of organic consumption in France. The first one is related to knowing whether the organic choice is a permanent feature of consumer’s attitude or not: Do organic buyers occasionally pick one organic product or do they choose organic for “several” categories? The second issue concerns the impact of prices on buying organics which is revisited, distinguishing between capturing new consumers and increasing the demand coming from people already involved in organic markets. These questions are examined using the market basket approach; the price issue requires further estimations of demand models. The study relies on two staple food products, eggs and milk. Securite Sanitaire Des Aliments: Fausse Alerte Et Vraie Crise AgEcon
Cahuzac, Eric; Hassan, Daniel; Monier-Dilhan, Sylvette.
These last years, a fall in consumer's confidence in food safety encouraged false alerts which sometimes led to actual crisis. This paper studies a crisis due to an alert concerning a risk of listeria on a raw milk camembert brand. The investigation relies on individual data. Two results of risk economy are confirmed. Firstly, information has asymmetric effects, according its positive or negative aspects. Secondly, punctual alerts have only temporary effects on consumption. In this crisis, education and consumer's habits did not pay any role.

Consumers' Decision between Private Labels and National Brands in a Retailer's Store: A Mixed Multinomial Logit Application AgEcon
Bergès-Sennou, Fabian; Hassan, Daniel; Monier-Dilhan, Sylvette; Raynal, Helene.
We propose to analyze the determinants of consumers' brand decision within a retailer store using a multinomial mixed logit approach. For the consumers' choice, national brands compete with private labels (both me-too product and high quality store brand). We first find that the standard private label (me-too), independently of the price effect, performs better than all national brands in terms of consumers' utility. Second, the high-quality private label does not reach its target yet in term of consumers' acceptance due to a poor product characteristics perception. Last, it appears that households' objective socioeconomic variables (income, education and household size) do not play any role in private label perception, whereas objective consumption...
