Water consumption and soil moisture distribution in melon crop with mulching and in a protected environment Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Monteiro,Rodrigo Otávio Câmara; Coelho,Rubens Duarte; Monteiro,Priscylla Ferraz Câmara; Whopmans,Jan; Lennartz,Bernd.
Mulching has become an important technique for land cover, but there are some technical procedures which should be adjusted for these new modified conditions to establish optimum total water depth. It is also important to observe the soil-water relations as soil water distribution and wetted volume dimensions. The objective of the present study was to estimate melon evapotranspiration under mulching in a protected environment and to verify the water spatial distribution around the melon root system in two soil classes. Mulching provided 27 mm water saving by reducing water evaporation. In terms of volume each plant received, on average, the amount of 175.2 L of water in 84 days of cultivation without mulching, while when was used mulching the water...

Assessing biophysical variable parameters of bean crop with hyperspectral measurements Scientia Agricola
Monteiro,Priscylla Ferraz Câmara; Angulo Filho,Rubens; Xavier,Alexandre Cândido; Monteiro,Rodrigo Otávio Câmara.
Recently high spectral resolution sensors have been developed, which allow new and more advanced applications in agriculture. Motivated by the increasing importance of hyperspectral remote sensing data, the need for research is important to define optimal wavebands to estimate biophysical parameters of crop. The use of narrow band vegetation indices (VI) derived from hyperspectral measurements acquired by a field spectrometer was evaluated to estimate bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grain yield, plant height and leaf area index (LAI). Field canopy reflectance measurements were acquired at six bean growth stages over 48 plots with four water levels (179.5; 256.5; 357.5 and 406.2 mm) and tree nitrogen rates (0; 80 and 160 kg ha-1) and four replicates. The...

Water and nutrient productivity in melon crop by fertigation under subsurface drip irrigation and mulching in contrasting soils Ciência Rural
Monteiro,Rodrigo Otávio Câmara; Coelho,Rubens Duarte; Monteiro,Priscylla Ferraz Câmara.
Cropping intensification and technical, economic and environmental issues require efficient application of production factors to maintain the soil productive capacity and produce good quality fruits and vegetables. The production factors, water and NPK nutrients, are the most frequent limiting factors to higher melon yields. The objective of the present study was to identify the influence of subsurface drip irrigation and mulching in a protected environment on the water and NPK nutrients productivity in melon cropped in two soil types: sandy loam and clay. The melon crop cultivated under environmental conditions with underground drip irrigation at 0.20m depth, with mulching on sandy loam soil increased water and N, P2O5 and K use efficiency.

Irrigation technology in South Africa and Kenya Ciência Rural
Monteiro,Rodrigo Otávio Câmara; Kalungu,Jokastah Wanzuu; Coelho,Rubens Duarte.
This paper reviews various irrigation technologies in both South Africa and Kenya that enable improvements in their socio-economic conditions. The two countries are located in semi-arid areas that experience extreme fluctuations in the availability of rain water for plant growth. Population growth exceeds the ability to produce food in numerous countries around the world and the two countries are not an exception. This experiment examined the constraints that farmers face and the role of government and nongovernmental organization in the uptake of modern technologies for irrigation. Detailed mechanisms and options to secure sustainable irrigation which are economically viable are considered. Despite the higher production of cereals and grains, fruits, and...
