CYP1A1, CYP2E1, GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, and TP53 polymorphisms: do they indicate susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and non-small-cell lung cancer? Genet. Mol. Biol.

Gene polymorphisms of phase I (CYP1A1 and CYP2E of cytochrome P,) and phase II (GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 of glutathione-S-transferase,) enzymes and the TP53 tumor suppressor gene were studied as markers in a sample of 262 Brazilians of European descent, the sample consisting of 97 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 75 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 90 control individuals. For NSCLC, we found no significant relationship between any of the markers studied and susceptibility to this disease. With respect to COPD, although the distribution of the CYP1A1, GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1 and TP53 genotypes was similar to that of the controls the frequency of the CYP2E1*1A/*5B heterozygote was about 6 times higher in COPD patients...

The burden of sepsis in critically ill human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients-a brief review BJID

Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy in 1996, we have seen dramatic changes in morbi-mortality rates from human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients. If on the one hand, the immunologic preservation-associated with the use of current antiretroviral therapy markedly diminishes the incidence of opportunistic infections, on the other hand it extended life expectancy of human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals similarly to the general population. However, the management of critically ill human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients remains challenging and troublesome for practicing clinician. Cutaneous mucormycosis in advanced HIV disease BJID

ABSTRACT Angionvasive mucormycosis is an emerging fungal disease known to affect mainly diabetics or subjects with profound neutropenia. Infection usually occurs through the inhalation route, but cutaneous inoculation may occur after trauma or burns. However, mucormycosis remains unusual in HIV infection. We report a fatal case of cutaneous mucormycosis due to Rhizopus arrhizus involving the scalp following herpes zoster infection. The patient was a 42-year-old man with advanced AIDS failing on salvage antiretroviral therapy. The fungus was diagnosed on the basis of histopathology and culture. Our case emphasizes the need to consider mucormycosis in the differential diagnosis of necrotic cutaneous lesions in patients with late-stage HIV disease.
