| The aim of this study was to determine how abiotic factors drive the phytoplankton community in a water supply reservoir within short sampling intervals. Samples were collected at the subsurface (0.1 m) and bottom of limnetic (8 m) and littoral (2 m) zones in both the dry and rainy seasons. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, pH, total nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus and orthophosphate. | The aim of this study was to characterize phytoplankton associations, as well as discuss controlling factors determining algal dominance in a eutrophic tropical reservoir, Mundaú, Pernambuco, Brazil. Water samples were collected during the dry period (January/2005) and the rainy period (June/2005). The samples were collected from both limnetic and littoral regions, and the phytoplankton assemblages identified from current literature after preservation in formaldehyde 4%. At the same time as sampling was done, in situ measurements of water temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, and pH were also taken. | Manguezais caracterizam-se por apresentarem amplas variações ambientais (principalmente de salinidade, irradiância e teor de oxigênio) e possuírem substrato relativamente instável, o que exige adaptações específicas dos organismos para habitar com sucesso este ambiente. O presente estudo procura, principalmente, contribuir com o conhecimento da biodiversidade, através da realização do levantamento da flora de cianobactérias habitantes de Manguezais do Estado de Pernambuco.
