Some limnological characteristics of the lower Sondu-Miriu River, Kenya OceanDocs
Mwashote, B.M.; Shimbira, W..
Chemical and physical investigations of water on a 10 km section of the Sondu-Miriu river in Kenya were conducted in 1988-1990. They revealed no significant spatial variation between three sampling stations. Variation existed between the waters of a floodpool and the river. Flooding had a general diluting effect on the nutrients. All the physical and chemical parameters investigated were within tolerable limits of water quality according to WHO criteria for drinking water, fisheries and other aquatic life. A total of 22 phytoplankton and 9 zooplankton genera were recorded. The algae Microcystis (cyanobacteria) and Navicula (diatom) were dominant. Mean densities were 283 cells or colonies per ml for phytoplankters and...

Gazi Bay mangrove creek OceanDocs
Kitheka, J.U.; Mwashote, B.M..
Gazi Bay (4.92°S, 39.50°E; Figure 1) is a shallow tropical coastal water system located on the southern coast of Kenya, approximately 50 km south of Mombasa. The total surface area of the bay including that covered by the mangrove forest is 15 km2. The mangrove forest covers a surface area of about 7 km2 (Kitheka 1996, 1997). Seagrass meadows and mangrove forest cover a surface area of about 12 km2. The bay is open to the Indian Ocean through a relatively wide (3,500 m) entrance, and is mostly shallow with mean depth at the entrance about 5 m. There are several narrow shallow cuts through the reef, which is mostly submerged except during spring tide. The bay is drained by two main rivers, the Kidogoweni River on the north-west part of the bay and the...

Levels of Cadmium and Lead in Water, Sediments and Selected Fish Species in Mombasa, Kenya OceanDocs
Mwashote, B.M..
Flame absorption spectrophotometry was used to investigate the concentration and distribution of cadmium and lead in water, sediments and selected fish species in Makupa and Tudor creeks in Mombasa, Kenya between May 1997 and March 1998. The results were compared with those obtained in relatively less anthropogenically influenced areas along the Kenyan coast. The mean concentrations for Pb ranged from not detectable (nd) to 0.012 mg/l, 0.2 to 58.0 mg/kg and nd to 59.3 mg/kg in water, sediment and fish samples respectively. Cadmium concentrations in water were generally below detection limits, while in sediment and fish samples, they ranged from nd to 1.0 mg/kg and nd to 3.7 mg/kg respectively. Overall, Pb and Cd concentrations were low in the water column...
