Leistus fulvibarbis Dejean – Wiederfund einer verschollenen Laufkäferart (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Altherr, Wendy; Henryk, Luka; Nagel, Peter.

Luka, Henryk; Marggi, Werner; Nagel, Peter.
The species Agonum nigrum DEJEAN, 1828, rare in central Europe, is reported for the first time from Switzerland. A distribution map is provided, based on reviewed specimens from museum collections and on literature data. Agonum nigrum is a Mediterranean species with a core distribution in southern Europe. The Swiss locality is situated on the upper Rhine near Basel in an area of meadows and light forest, which has been strongly shaped by man. The habitat is characterized by regular artificial inundation for ground water supply. The characters distinguishing A. nigrum from the similar Agomun atratum (DUFTSCHMID, 1812) are critically examined, and corrected or supplemented when neccssary.

Einfluss von Habitatmanagement auf die Reduktion von Schadlepidopteren im Kohl Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Leimgruber, Andrea; Willareth, Martin; Nagel, Peter; Pfiffner, Lukas; Wyss, Eric; Schlatter, Christian; Schied, Johannes; Traugott, Michael.
Beneficials can prevent or reduce outbreaks of pest species. To strengthen the populations of beneficials, their food sources must be improved in cultivated areas. The effects of habitat management for augmenting beneficial population on parasitism and predation rates of three lepidopteran pest species were investigated on two organic fields in Alten (Switzerland). The aim was to improve pest regulation through wild flower strips along fields and by planting Centaurea cyanus as companion plant within the crop. Strips of Centaurea cyanus and Fagopyrum esculentum increased parasitsm on the lepidopteran pests. C. cyanus planted as companion plant furthermore increased predation on the eggs and parasitism of the larvae of Mamestra brassicae. Several...

The egg parasitoid Telenomus sp. as a novel biocontrol agent to prevent the cabbage moth Organic Eprints
Barloggio, Guendalina; Tamm, Lucius; Oberhänsli, Thomas; Nagel, Peter; Luka, Henryk.
This work, which is part of a project called Biocomes (www.biocomes.eu), focuses on the control of the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) through mass release of the egg parasitoid Telenomus sp. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). In the first year of the project we conducted different experiments to undercover aspects of the biology of this egg parasitoid that could help the creation of an efficient rearing system. Parallel we developed a species specific primer for the molecular species determination. Here we will present the most important results.

Fauna Helvetia Carabidae Ecology - Atlas Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Marggi, Werner; Huber, Charles; Gonseth, Yves; Nagel, Peter.

Do wildflower strips enhance pest control in organic cabbage? Organic Eprints
Schied, Johannes; Leimgruber, Andrea; Willareth, Martin; Nagel, Peter; Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk; Wyss, Eric.
Within this project we assess whether wildflower strips and companion plants increase the control of cabbage pests Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) by (1) naturally occurring parasitoids and predators and (2) mass‐releasedn Trichogramma brassciae (Bezdenko) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) parasitoids. Two organic cabbage fields were used for this study: adjacent to each field a wildflower strip was sown and companion plants (Centaurea cyanus L. (Asteraceae)) intermixed within the crop. Within each field ~15,000 M. brassicae eggs were placed out to determine the parasitism rates by mass‐released T. brassicae and to assess the levels of egg...

Effects of experimentally planting non-crop flowers into cabbage fields on the abundance and diversity of predators Organic Eprints
Ditner, Nadine; Balmer, Oliver; Beck, Jan; Blick, Theo; Nagel, Peter; Luka, Henryk.
Flowery field margins and intersowing of crops with flowers are used as management practices to promote arthropod biodiversity as well as biocontrol agents. Positive effects of enhancement (in abundance and species richness) of hymenopteran parasitoids on control of Lepidoptera pests have previously been demonstrated. However, effects on predatory arthropods, which may also serve as pest control agents, remain unclear. In an experimental study in cabbage fields we tested how sown flower strips on field margins and intersowing with cornflower affected the species richness, abundance and community composition of ground beetles and spiders. Furthermore, we investigated whether effects of flower margins are dependent on the distance from the field margins. We...
