Servicios ecosistémicos y bienestar local: caso de estudio sobre productos de medicina natural en Panguipulli, sur de Chile Ecología austral
Bentancourt,Renard S; Nahuelhual,Laura.

Implications of the Structural Change in Dairy Products Trade on Milk Price Paid to Producers in Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Engler,Alejandra; Nahuelhual,Laura.
Since 1990 row milk production has exhibited a rapid increase from 890 million liters in 1990 to 1,818 million in 2006. The excess production has allowed for the expansion of the export sector, converting Chile in a net exporter in 2001. A relevant question in this new market scenario is how this structural change can affect milk prices paid to producers in Chile. The consequences of this structural change were explored in this study using a Vector Error Correction (VEC) model and cointegration analysis. The results indicated that the domestic, CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) and FOB (Free On Board) prices were cointegrated, implying that changes in the import and export prices are transmitted to the domestic market affecting the milk price paid to...

Labor as a welfare measure in contingent valuation: the value of a forest restoration project Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schiappacasse,Ignacio; Vásquez,Felipe; Nahuelhual,Laura; Echeverría,Cristian.
Monetary contributions might not be appropriate welfare measures in contingent valuation (CV) when household incomes are very low. In such cases, willingness to pay (WTP) is restricted by a household's ability to reduce its consumption of other goods to pay for the environmental good under valuation. Beneficiaries, however, may be willing to contribute their time to work on a project instead of paying money. In this context, we assess the benefits of ecosystem services restoration in a rural area of high conservation value in central Chile, using a CV study that includes two WTP questions, one for cash and another for labor payments. The results indicate that labor payments in the form of a number of working hours per week were highly accepted among...

Adoption of cleaner production practices by dairy farmers in southern Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Nahuelhual,Laura; Engler,María A; Carrillo,Bernardo; Moreira,Víctor; Castro,Ingrid.
Rising concerns about the environmental costs of dairy production have resulted in an increasing use of farm practices that diminish negative production externalities. Yet, little empirical evidence exists regarding the factors influencing the adoption of pollution-reducing strategies by dairy farmers. In this study, we estímate a logit probability model to explain first-stage adoption of capital-intensive cleaner production (CP) practices, using a sample of 100 médium and large-size dairy farms located in southern Chile. Voluntary approaches to pollution control in agriculture are relatively recent in Chile and diffusion has been slow and uneven among farmers. Only 43% of the farmers surveyed were using some CP practices at the time of the interview. The...
