PRICING EFFICIENCY IN THE RETAIL MEAT MARKET AgEcon
Naughtin, John C.; Quilkey, John J..
The degree of pricing efficiency achieved in the retail meat market is reconsidered in this paper. The approach adopted is to develop an economic model of the pricing behaviour of retail butchers, to postulate a behavioural model consistent with the economic model, and to test this model using the data supplied by three retail butchers. The results indicate that the deleterious effects of price levelling and averaging practices on pricing efficiency may have been understated in earlier studies. It is concluded that further research is required to re-assess the extent of the problem of pricing efficiency in the retail meat market.

The Accuracy of Market Reporters in the Estimation of Carcass Weight and Fat Cover for Cattle AgEcon
Naughtin, John C..
In this paper the results of a trial to test the accuracy of livestock market reporters in estimating carcass weight and fat cover are reported. It is concluded that the current performance of the reporters in carcass weight estimation is satisfactory, but there is scope for improvement in the estimation of fat cover. The importance of a continuing training program for market reporters to maintain and improve on current standards of accuracy is emphasised.

The Accuracy of Market Reporters under Liveweight Selling Conditions AgEcon
Naughtin, John C.; Holland, B.J..
A series of trials was conducted to test the accuracy of livestock market reporters under liveweight selling conditions in Victoria using a range of cattle types. The performance of the market reporters in carcass weight and fat cover estimation was poorer for cows than for bullocks, while the accuracy of the estimates for bullocks sold under liveweight was similar to that reported earlier for young cattle sold on a per head basis.
