KNOWLEDGE BASED VIEW OF STRATEGY: STRATEGIC COMPLEMENTARITIES FROM AN AUSTRIAN ECONOMIC AND STRATEGIC NETWORK PERSPECTIVE AgEcon
Ng, Desmond W..
The concept of knowledge and its related dimensions of information and learning have traditionally received considerable research attention by scholars of organization and strategic management theorists. The increasing role of knowledge as defining characteristic of the modern knowledge economy has renewed an interest to the importance of knowledge to a firm's competitive advantage. Such interest has raised a significant conceptual issue as to whether the new knowledge economy warrants an alternative framework to understanding competitive strategy. As a result, a conceptual model of knowledge based competitive advantage is proposed. Such a conceptual framework rests upon the subjective tenets of Austrian entrepreneurship and strategic network perspectives....

Such interest has raised a significant conceptual issue as to whether the new knowledge economy warrants an alternative framework to understanding competitive strategy. L'Hoir, Chantelle; Goddard, Ellen W.; Ng, Desmond W.; Lerohl, Mel L..
The organic industry in Canada is growing and Alberta organic grain producers have expressed a concern that the marketing system for organic grains in Alberta is poorly organized. This poorly organized system may hinder producers from optimizing market potential. This paper assesses different organizational structures that might assist Alberta organic grain producers in optimizing market potential. The choice of organizational structures that could potentially be used to market organic grain in Alberta is based on the types organizational structures that currently exist in the market, producer motivations, and the obstacles that exist in the market. Bio Energy Entry Timing from a Resource Based View and Organizational Ecology Perspective AgEcon
Ng, Desmond W.; Goldsmith, Peter D..
Recent changes in U.S. energy policy have prompted the growth of the bio energy market. The ability to quickly enter and respond to the opportunities of this market is critical to an agribusiness’ success. Understanding entry into this rapidly growing bio energy market, however, is not well understood. In drawing on management theories of the Resource Based View (RBV) and that of Organizational Ecology, this study develops a conceptual and dynamic programming model to explain the entry behaviors of different types of bio energy businesses. A contribution of this study is it demonstrates that bio energy entry decisions emphasize a basic trade-off involving gains from a commitment to specialized, and correspondingly higher cost assets, and gains from...

Structural Change in a Food Supply Chain AgEcon
Ng, Desmond W..
As changes in modern agribusiness markets have placed increasing emphasis to the study of structural change processes, this research advances an agent based model to examine transitions from a spot market exchange to a vertically coordinated arrangement in a supply chain system. This agent base simulation model draws from the subjective theme of Austrian entrepreneurship, behavioral theories of the firm and social networks. The results of this agent based simulation model indicate that structural change occurs with market structures that facilitate information transmission rather than from incentive based contractual arrangements.

Valuing Strategic Alliances in the Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology Industry AgEcon
McCulloch, Kathryn; Jackson, Randy; Ng, Desmond W..
In an era of rapid and changing technological advances, a firm's survival and growth depends on its' ability to introduce products to the market. Since a firm's growth and survival depends on its' ability to develop products and services over time (Penrose, 1959), the question posed by this study is what determines a firm's ability to introduce products to market? In this study, a firm's ability to introduce product to markets are influenced by its' "absorptive capacity" to identify and internalize the resource benefits of its' alliance partners. Such an integrated view is absent in firm level and strategic alliance studies of product development. A conceptual model of firm product introductions is developed and empirically tested. Results generally...
