Additions and corrections to the lists of Lepidoptera of Tula Province are given, which contain 40 species, 36 of which species are listed for the province for the first time, 9 species (Stigmella naturnella (Klimesch, 1936), Stigmella tiliae (Frey, 1856), Stigmella microtheriella (Stainton, 1854), Stigmella catharticella (Stainton, 1853), Stigmella magdalenae (Klimesch, 1950), Rebelia nocturnella (Alpherak?, 1876), Agonopterix sp.pr. cnicella (Treitschke, 1832), Monochroa lutulentella (Zeller, 1839), Phycitodes lacteella (Rothschild, 1915)) — for the first time for the Central European Russia, 1 species (Aristotelia coeruleopictella (Caraja, 1920)) — for the first time for European Russia, 1 species (Stigmella ulmivora (Fologne, 1860) — for the first time... |

Abstract. The Nepticulidae of the Russian provinces (oblasts) Ul’yanovsk, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd, Astrakhan and Chelyabinsk and the Kalmyk Republic are listed. We record 60 species, including two only previously recorded, 28 species only on the basis of leafmines (indicated with an *). Seventeen species are recorded as new for Russia. Eleven of these are reported on the basis of adults: Stigmella glutinosae (Stainton, 1858), S. ulmiphaga (Preissecker, 1942), S. thuringiaca (Petry, 1904), S. rolandi Van Nieukerken, 1990, S. hybnerella (Hübner, 1813), Trifurcula (Trifurcula) subnitidella (Duponchel, 1843), T. (T.) silviae Van Nieukerken, 1990, T. (T.) beirnei Puplesis, 1984, T. (T.) chamaecytisi Z. & A. La√tüvka, 1994, Ectoedemia (Zimmermannia)... |

New and interesting Microlepidoptera from the Netherlands, mainly in 1984. The following species are recorded here for the first time from the Netherlands: Trifucula maxima Klimesch, Leucospilapteryx omissella (Stainton), Argyresthia (Blastotere) trifasciata (Staudinger) , Teleiodes wagae (Nowicki), Chionodes tragicella (Heyden), Gelechia muscosella Zeller, Epinotia thapsiana (Zeller) and Celypha rosaceana (Schläger). Monochroa niphognatha Gozmány has also been recorded for the first time, but was misidentified previously in our country as M. tetragonella Stainton. The fist authentic Dutch specimen of the latter species is recorded her now. Bucculatrix antispilella Spuler is removed from the Dutch list. The known distributions of five Tinaeidae in the... |

The identity of Stigmella zelleriella (Snellen, 1875) n. comb. is fixed by designation of a lectotype. Nepticula repentiella Wolff, 1955, and Nepticula lappovimella Svensson, 1976, are placed in synonomy with S. zelleriella, which is redescribed and discriminated from resembling species. It appears to have a northern distribution, occurring in sand-dunes on the Salix repens L.-complex and on moors in Scandinavia on Salix lapponum L. The related S. benanderella (Wolff, 1955), which occurs on the same foodplants, is also diagnosed. |

Nepticulidae represent one of the early diverging Lepidoptera lineages, and the family currently comprises over 850 described species. The larvae of the vast majority of the species are leaf miners on Angiosperms and highly monophagous, which has led to persistent ideas on coevolution with their plant hosts. We present here a molecular phylogeny based on eight gene fragments from 355 species, representing 20 out of 22 extant Nepticulidae genera. Using two fossil calibration points, we performed molecular dating to place the origin of the family in the Early Cretaceous, before the main Angiosperm diversification. Based on our results we propose a new classification, abandoning all ranks between family and genus, aswell as subgenera to allowfor a stable... |

The native leafmining moth Tischeria ekebladella (Lepidoptera: Tischeriidae) feeds on oaks and recently has become a pest of silviculture and urban green areas in central Europe. The behavioral responses of male moths to hexane extracts of whole bodies of calling females or males were tested under laboratory conditions. Only extracts of females elicited responses from males. Analysis of extracts by coupled gas chromatography/electroantennographic detection revealed the presence of two electroantennogramactive peaks. Structure elucidation of these compounds, by gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry and independent synthesis revealed them to be (3Z,6Z,9Z)-tricosa-3,6,9-triene and (3Z,6Z,9Z,19Z)-tricosa-3,6,9,19-tetraene. While the triene was present in both... |

Non-professional taxonomists have been responsible for describing more than half of the animal species discovered in Europe from 1998 to 2007 (see also Nature 467, 788; 2010). The extraordinary current rate of description of new species makes Europe an unexpected frontier for biodiversity exploration. The Fauna Europaea database (http://www.faunaeur.org), released in 2004, lists more than 125,000 European species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals. More than 700 new species are described each year in Europe — four times the rate of two centuries ago. However, we have not yet reached saturation in the inventory of European fauna, and we cannot accurately estimate the total number of species living in the continent's ecosystems. |
