Checklist of Acroceridae, Mydidae and Therevidae (Diptera) from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gillung,Jéssica Paula; Almeida,Julia Calhau; Rodrigues,Paula Fernanda Motta; Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.
ABSTRACT Here we provide a checklist of the flies of the families Acroceridae, Mydidae and Therevidae on the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Acroceridae are represented in Brazil by 30 species, and only Philopota tuberculata Westwood is recorded for the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The three reported species of Mydidae in the state, Gauromydas autuorii (D’Andretta), Messiasia zikani D’Andretta, and Messiasia notospila (Wiedemann) are among the 27 species now known in Brazil. There are 30 species of Therevidae in Brazil, and only one, Cyclotelus kroeberi (Cole) is known to occur in the state.

Revision and systematic placement of Prospalaea Aldrich (Diptera, Tachinidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.
Revision and systematic placement of Prospalaea Aldrich (Diptera, Tachinidae). In the present study, the genotype and single species Prospalaea insularis (Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1891) is redescribed and the male terminalia fully illustrated. The species is known only from a single type specimen collected from the Caribbean subregion, which was examined for this study. A new systematic placement is proposed, with the genus being transferred from the Exoristini to Eryciini, both tribes of Exoristinae.

Distributional patterns of the neotropical fly genus Polietina Schnabl & Dziedzicki (Diptera, Muscidae): a phylogeny-supported analysis using panbiogeographic tools Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Nihei,Silvio Shigueo; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
Over the last decades, Neotropical region has been subdivided into smaller units (areas of endemism), yet these subdivisions were not necessarily based on an evolutionary perspective. Consequently, these areas of endemism may be biogeographic units that do not actually represent natural historical units. Here, the distributional patterns of the genus Polietina Schnabl & Dziedzicki, 1911 (Diptera, Muscidae; including 15 species) are analysed by applying panbiogeographic tools to recognise and propose primary homologous areas within the Neotropical region. The analysis and discussion of the results obtained here will be reconciled to the information provided by the phylogenetic hypothesis available for the genus.

Review of the New World genus Cholomyia (Diptera, Tachinidae), with a new species from Costa Rica Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santis,Marcelo Domingos de; Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.
ABSTRACT The tachinid genus Cholomyia presents Neotropical and Nearctic distribution with three species: C. acromion (Wiedemann, 1824), C. filipes (Walker, 1857), and C. inaequipes Bigot, 1884. In the present paper, all species are reviewed and redescribed, and a new species from Costa Rica is described, C. zumbadoi sp. nov. An identification key based on males is provided. For the first time, the male terminalia of all species, and the female terminalia and first instar larva of C. inaequipes are described and illustrated. Finally, based on the detailed morphological study we discuss the systematic placement of Cholomyia into Myiophasiini-Tachininae. A list of host–parasite records is synthesized.

Catálogo do material-tipo de Tachinidae (Diptera) depositado no Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo Rev. Bras. entomol.
Toma,Ronaldo; Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.

On the first tachinid fly (Diptera, Tachinidae) carrying Asclepiadoideae pollinaria in the Neotropical Region Rev. Bras. entomol.
Nihei,Silvio Shigueo; Schwarz,Elizabeth de Araujo.
On the first tachinid fly (Diptera, Tachinidae) carrying Asclepiadoideae pollinaria in the Neotropical Region. This paper reports the first Neotropical Tachinidae species possibly associated to pollination of Asclepiadoideae: a female of Euacaulona sumichrasti Townsend, 1908 (Diptera, Tachinidae, Phasiinae, Trichopodini) carrying pollinaria of Gonolobus parviflorus Decne., 1844 (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae, Asclepiadeae: Gonolobinae) attached to its proboscis. The fly specimen was collected in Paraguay, Departamento Canindeyú. The pollinarium is illustrated and described herein. This represents the first anthophilous record to G. parviflorus and to the genus.

Review of the type material of three species of Polietina Schnabl & Dziedzicki (Diptera, Muscidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.
The type material of three species of Polietina Schnabl & Dziedzicki, 1911 was examined. Polietina flavidicincta (Stein, 1904) is redescribed and a lectotype is designated; P. stellata (Couri, 1982) is considered junior synonym of P. flavithorax (Stein, 1904), and for the latter a lectotype is designated. The neotype previously designated is considered invalid.

Biogeographic analysis of Crocidiinae (Diptera, Bombyliidae): finding congruence among morphological, molecular, fossil and paleogeographical data Rev. Bras. entomol.
Lamas,Carlos José Einicker; Nihei,Silvio Shigueo.
Biogeographic studies dealing with Bombyliidae are rare in the literature and no information is available on its origin and early diversification. In this study, we found evidence from molecular phylogeny and from fossil record supporting a Middle Jurassic origin of the Bombylioidea, taken as a starting point to discuss the biogeography and diversification of Crocidiinae. Based on a previously published phylogenetic hypothesis, we performed a Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA) to discuss the biogeographical history of Crocidiinae lineages. This subfamily is mostly distributed over arid areas of the early components of the Gondwanaland: Chile and southern Africa, but also in southwestern Palaearctic and southwestern Nearctic. The vicariant events affecting the...
