Observing the observers – uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of the article is to uncover the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explore how values are embedded in five research perspectives assessing organic food systems, 1) Food Science, 2) Discourse Analysis, 3) Phenomenology, 4) Neoclassical Welfare Economics and 5) Actor-Network Theory. The article shows that value has various meanings in different scientific perspectives, and that a strategy for including and balancing...

Projektet...

Opportunities and challenges for multicriteria assessment of food system sustainability Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Moller, Henrik; Læssøe, Jeppe; Noe, Egon.
The focus of the Special Feature on “Multicriteria assessment of food system sustainability” is on the complex challenges of making and communicating overall assessments of food systems sustainability based on multiple and varied criteria. Four papers concern the choice and development of appropriate tools for making multicriteria sustainability assessments that handle built-in methodological conflicts and trade-offs between different assessment objectives. They underscore the value of linking diverse methods and tools, or nesting and stepping their deployment, to help build resilience and sustainability. They conclude that there is no one tool, one framework, or one indicator set that is appropriate for the different purposes and contexts of...

Values and volume in sustainable organic markets chains – a multiperspectival analysis Organic Eprints
Lamine, Claire; Noe, Egon.
Organic sectors and markets differ throughout Europe, but common to all is that local organic market initiatives have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume (both in terms of management and logistics or course, but also in terms of maintaining their core values) and often , while mainstream large-scale market chains have inherent problems in securing and advancing organic values. This has been amply studied within agrifood studies and especially within the conventionalisation debate. However, beyond these often dichotomized views, an assessment of the diversity of organic chains in diverse European countries has showed the existence a diversity of intermediary cases which can be considered as midscale “Values Based food chains” (Kvam and...

Combining Luhmann and Actor-Network Theory to see Farm Enterprises as Self-organizing Systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
From a rural, sociological point of view no social theories have so far been able to grasp the ontological complexity and special character of a farm enterprise as an entity in a really satisfying way. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and actor-network theory (ANT) of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a new and radical framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing, heterogeneous system. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that must produce and reproduce itself through demarcation from the surrounding world by selection of meaning. The meaning of the system is expressed through the goals, values, and the logic of the...

A prototype tool for multicriteria assessments to develop organic food chains Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
The problem that we are faced with is that whereas research and experience suggest that stakeholder involvement is crucial to the successful development and implementation of methods of sustainability assessment, it is far from clear how to do this. In this paper we investigate how stakeholders may be involved in making and using overall assessments of organic food systems, and we propose a prototype for how this can be done.

Conventionalization or diversification? Development in the Danish organic production sector following market expansion Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon.
The organic food market is constantly evolving and organic products are exchanged at multiple markets constituted by particular forms of interaction between producers and consumers. The aim of this paper is to explore how the market influences organic production by looking at the relation between the market and producers engagement towards trust and quality building as well as farm level production strategy. We distinguish between four different market agencements, an arrangement of actors with agency: 1) standardizing market agencement, 2) personalizing market agencement 3) virtualizing market agencement and 4) aesthetifying market agencement. Through qualitative interviews with organic producers, several different strategies are identified. The data...

Robuste og højtydende økologiske sædskifter i praksis Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.

Nature and Nature Values in Organic agriculture an analysis of contested consepts and values among different actors in organic farming Organic Eprints
Hansen, Lene; Noe, Egon; Højring, Katrine.
The relationship between agriculture and nature is a central issue in the current agricultural debate. Organic Farming has ambitions and a special potential in relation to nature. Consideration for nature is part of the guiding principals of organic farming and many organic farmers are committed to protecting natural qualities. However, the issue of nature, landscape, and land use is not straightforward. Nature is an ambiguous concept that involves multiple interests and actors reaching far beyond farmers. The Danish research project Nature Quality in Organic Farming has investigated the relationship between nature and organic farming. This article will focus on an expert workshop held in connection with the project that investigates the way different...

Farm management, knowledge and multidimensional farming - some reflections from the perspective of farm enterprises as heterogeneous self-organising systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The history of modernisation of agriculture is the story of specialisation into a one-dimensional food production, and in recent decades there has been a strong specialisation into one-commodity farms. Changing conditions in terms of technical features and market are commonly seen as the major rationale and driving force of this specialisation. However, the growing amount of knowledge and how this knowledge is produced and circulated may be an even stronger factor of explanation of this development and thereby a key to understand the challenges and barriers of the development of multidimensional farming. Based on empirical investigations and theoretical reflections I will discuss the barriers and potentials for management of multidimensional farming,...

Observing Environments Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
> Context • Society is faced with “wicked” problems of environmental sustainability, which are inherently multiperspectival, and there is a need for explicitly constructivist and perspectivist theories to address them. > Problem • However, different constructivist theories construe the environment in different ways. The aim of this paper is to clarify the conceptions of environment in constructivist approaches, and thereby to assist the sciences of complex systems and complex environmental problems. > Method • We describe the terms used for “the environment” in von Uexküll, Maturana & Varela, and Luhmann, and analyse how their conceptions of environment are connected to differences of perspective and observation. > Results • We...

The challenge of management of multidimensional enterprises analysed from a logo-poietic perspective Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
The challenge to multidimensional farm management is analysed and discussed from the perspective of the farm enterprise, explored within a logo-poietic framework as a self-organising system/network. In conclusion, development of management of multidimensional farming takes: a reconstruction of the values, ideas, and meaning around which the farm enterprises are organised, a new way of increase of nonredundant complexity, shifting from dimension reduction to contextualisation, and a development of interactive relationships that facilitate network building of multidimensional farming.

Three Perspectives on Motivation and Multi-Criteria Assessment of Organic Food Systems Organic Eprints
Læssøe, Jeppe; Ljungdalh, Anders; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon; Kastberg, Peter; Christensen, Tove; Olsen, Søren Bøye; Kærgård, Niels; Dubgaard, Alex.
The complexity of values related to organic food systems is normally difficult to ascertain, understand and act upon for both producers and consumers, as well as for other agents. In this paper we have suggested MCA as a method that may help in coping with this complexity. Furthermore, we have pointed to the importance of addressing the challenge of motivation when designing such an MCA tool. In doing so, we have applied three very different concepts of motivation – an economic, a psycho-social and a relational concept. While they represent fundamentally different perspectives, by incorporating all three within a multi-perspective approach, we have been able to explore ’a broader array of relevant aspects of motivation when designing a MCA tool to be used...

Values-based food chains – Recoupling man and soil? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Kjeldsen, Chris; Bjørkhaug, Hilde; Kvam, Gunn-Turid.
Abstract – A market driven sustainable develop-ment of organic agriculture depends on the abilities of the organic food chains to mediate qualities (vales) form place of production to place of consumption. A Pirsig’s based relational analysis reveals the importance of the abilities of all actors of the food chain to relate to and to include these qualities in their strategy. Transparency along the whole chain all way back to place and mode of production seem important.

Mediation of quality in values-based food chains Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Laursen, Klaus Brønd; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Organic agriculture as a movement builds on a range of values concerning a sustainable development of organic farming. The internal debate within the organic movement is pointing in different directions in relation to a sustainable development of organic farming (Alrøe and Noe 2008). Pivotal for this debate is the formulation of the basic principles and values that are to be fundamental for the development of organic farming in praxis (Alrøe and Kristensen 2004). Furthermore this debate also concerns an ambition of the development of organic agriculture to be market driven. The organic regulation and associated control is developed to support this marketization of the organic products.

Danish case report: The Danish Food Communities Organic Eprints
Kjeldsen, Chris; Noe, Egon; Laursen, Klaus Brønd.
The Food Communities was chosen as a case for HealthyGrowth because they constitute a major novelty within the Danish foodscape. As indicated in section 3, the Food 2 Communities have emerged as the latest incarnation of a series of attempts to forge alternative food networks operating beyond the supermarket system. Denmark is distinguished by a large market share of organic food being sold via supermarkets, but The Food Communities are a novelty due to two factors, (1) they have experienced a rapid growth since the outset in 2010, and (2) they are organised in a decentralised manner, where they continue to split up the network in chapters, each operating within their distinct local area. The Food Communities are a predominantly urban phenomenon.

Luhmann and Actor-Network Theory combined: Farm enterprises as self-organizing systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
From a rural, sociological point of view no really satisfying social theories suggested have been able to grasp the complexity and special character of a farm entity. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and the Actor-network Theory of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a fruitful binocular perspective of a farm as a framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing entity and for studying the social, economic, technical, and biological aspects. The two approaches build on two different ontologies and cannot readily be merged into one theory. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that has to produce and reproduce itself through...

Sustainability assessment and complementarity Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Sustainability assessments bring together different perspectives that pertain to sustainability to produce overall assessments, and a wealth of approaches and tools have been developed in the past decades. However, two major problems remain. The problem of integration concerns the surplus of possibilities for integration; different tools produce different assessments. The problem of implementation concerns the barrier between assessment and transformation; assessments do not lead to the expected changes in practice. We aim to analyze issues of complementarity in sustainability assessment and transformation as a key to better handling the problems of integration and implementation. Based on a generalization of Niels Bohr’s complementarity from quantum...
