Development impact of higher education in Africa: The case of Uganda AgEcon

Using macro data from a series of household surveys, the paper demonstrates that to some extent there is positive correlation between per capita GDP growth and student enrollment in public universities in Uganda. It also finds that the higher education graduates employed in those sectors which have recorded higher growth rates. The higher education graduates do contribute to the economy indirectly through tax revenues which are in turn used to support social programs among others that benefit the society at large. the paper also demonstrates that the share of taxes from higher education graduates has been increasing over time...

Promoting development oriented financial system in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Uganda country experience AgEcon

Uganda faced a number of challenges at the time of embarking on financial sector reforms. These challenges were complicated by decades of economic mismanagement and political instability that had prevailed in the country. In particular, there were concerns about the inadequacy of a critical mass of skilled and experienced financial sector players. This shortcoming inherently induced undue impediments to Uganda's corporate reporting regime. Further shortcoming were related to the lack of comprehensive financial information and underlying databases. It is now recognized that investment in financial data gathering usually provides the required critical support base for monitoring efforts and for crisis prediction in the financial sector...
