Alternatives for the substitution of synthetic vitamin B2 or vitamin B2 produced from GMOs Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Früh, Barbara; Schneider, Claudia.
Today in conventional food and feed production added vitamin B2 is produced almost exclusively from a GMO,1 namely the genetically modified Bacillus subtilis. Vitamin B2 applied in certified organic food and feed productions is an exception, as it is still synthesized conventionally. In fall 2007 and also recently, there has been a lack of non-GMO derived vitamin B2 on the European market, which has caused temporary supply problems for organic producers. This event triggered the political will to conduct new research in order to find alternative solutions for the substitution of synthetic vitamin B2 in organic agriculture.

Marktanalyse zum Bio-Honig-Verkauf in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Zollinger, Nicola; Oehen, Bernadette; Garibay, Salvador.

Consumer preferences for farmers’ varieties Organic Eprints
Meier, Claudia; Oehen, Bernadette.
Our food value chain is characterized by an ongoing concentration and standardization on all levels and a concomitant loss in diversity. Putting the breeding and multiplication of seeds back into the hands of farmers is one strategy to counteract this concentration process and embed diversity in the food value chain. In this project we investigated consumers’ preferences for so-called farmers’ varieties, using vegetables as an example.

Anbau transgener Pflanzen – Räumliche Aspekte der Koexistenz Organic Eprints
Schlatter, Christian; Oehen, Bernadette.
Most of the farmers in Switzerland won’t apply GMO farming. Their organisations support a five-year ban for the marketing of transgenic plants. However, in Switzerland there is no political discussion on co-existence as in the European community and their member states. In this study, the spatial aspects of coexistence of transgenic, conventional and organic farming in Switzerland are investigated. It shows that there are only 28 communities of 2848 where all farmers are bound by different labels to produce GMO-free. Most of these communities are situated in high altitude regions. In contrast, in arable regions of Switzerland, few farmers produce organic crops. In most of the communities in Switzerland, the simultaneous production with and without...

Workshop zu Züchtung und Züchtungstechniken Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Thommen, Andreas.

Embedding Diversity: Communication and Label Concept for Underutilized Crops – Checklist for your First Evaluation Organic Eprints
Holzherr, Philipp; Förster, Iris; Oehen, Bernadette.
There are some very successful cases of marketing of underutilized crops in European countries. Examples are the marketing of rare varieties in Austrian and Swiss supermarkets. Other examples are market initiatives in Spain, France, or Italy, selling local produces and processed foods in specialised shops, at farmers markets, or directly at the farm. A consumer survey was conducted in 2017 in France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland during DIVERSIFOOD project in order to gain additional data on such examples; and Rossi et al. (2016)1 developed the DIVERSIFOOD Case Study Framework. Among others an objective of these studies was to identify some best-case examples for the use of a trademark, label or logo and the related communication strategies. Then a...

Sustainable food systems Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Robert, Home.
Eating is essential to all people on the planet. Food maintains life, health and wellbeing. Most of us do not produce our own food, but depend on others for our food supply. This food can come from near or far and can be heavily or lightly processed. The ingredients, which are the raw materials for food, have to be produced somewhere and we, the consumers, often have little or no idea about whether the ingredients are produced in a sustainable way.

Mitigating the impact of agriculture on air quality and climate change: Solutions for improved Nitrogen management Organic Eprints
Steinemann, Beatrice; Gattinger, Andreas; Krauss, Maike; Berner, Alfred; Leiber, Florian; Maurer, Veronika; Meier, Matthias; Oehen, Bernadette; Bautze, Lin; Niggli, Urs.
Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever. This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are unprecedented in at least the last 800 000 years. Their effects, together with those of other anthropogenic drivers, have been detected throughout the climate system and are extremely likely to have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.

Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Schlatter, Christian.

Gattinger, Andreas; Oehen, Bernadette.

Field Simulation of Transgenic Seed Admixture Dispersion in Maize with a Blue Kernel Color Marker Organic Eprints
Dietiker, Dominique; Oehen, Bernadette; Ochsenbein, Christian; Westgate, Mark E.; Stamp, Peter.
Seed purity in maize (Zea mays L.) has been almost neglected in coexistence studies. In this study, the impact of initial seed admixture was assessed in 20 fields (17 integrated pest management [IPM] and three organics) in the Swiss Midlands in 2007 and 2008 and a seed admixture threshold was proposed. The bluekernelled French hybrid Adonis was used as a color-marker admixture. In 2009, its pollen production was assessed relative to those of two commercial hybrids (LG 32.12 and DKC 2960) that released 41 and 62%, respectively, less pollen than Adonis. Adonis was added to commercial yellow hybrid seeds at a proportion of 1:99. On average, the seed admixture at harvest was 2.8 times greater than the seed admixture at sowing. The greater pollen production of...

Guidance Document and Considerations for the Marketing of Biodiverse Food Products Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella.
The prevailing food supply chains are characterised by a highly standardised food offer produced in an impoverished agricultural system. The loss of diversity in food production is not only a loss of crop species and varieties but also a loss of taste, culture and knowledge and adaptability to a changing environment. This booklet is intended to contribute to a transformation of this system by supporting the use of the biological diversity of cultures. It aims at supporting practitioners that want to enhance crop genetic diversity in agricultural systems and increase the link between consumers and producers. Moreover, the booklet contains a compilation of all the lessons learned from the valorisation of crop genetic diversity during the European research...

Ranking matrices as operational tools for the environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops on non-target organisms Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Weiss, Gabriele; Oehen, Bernadette; Römbke, Jörg; Jänsch, Stephan; Teichmann, Hanka; Lang, Andreas; Otto, Mathias; Tappeser, Beatrix.
For the operationalization of the structured, stepwise selection procedure for non-target testing organisms integrated into the new EFSA guidelines for environmental risk assessment of GM plants practicaltools – i.e. ranking matrices – were developed. These tools – some of them are new and some are refinedfrom older ones – were tested using the GM case crop of TC 1507 maize. The selection procedure consists of six steps. The strategy builds on identifying the important ecological functions for the particularcropping system and compiling a species lists according to their ecological functions and presence inthe specific receiving environments. Subsequently, the species numbers are reduced in a systematic, stepwise fashion to a relevant and practical number...

High-resolution maps of Swiss apiaries and their applicability to study spatial distribution of bacterial honey bee brood diseases Organic Eprints
von Büren, Raphael S.; Oehen, Bernadette; Kuhn, Nikolaus J.; Erler, Silvio.
Honey bees directly affect and are influenced by their local environment, in terms of food sources, pollinator densities, pathogen and toxin exposure and climate. Currently, there is a lack of studies analyzing these data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to investigate spatial relationships with the environment. Particularly for intercolonial pathogen transmission, it is known that the likelihood of a healthy colony to become infested (e.g., Varroosis) or infected (e.g., American foulbrood-AFB, European foulbrood-EFB) increases with higher colony density. Whether these transmission paths can actually be asserted at apiary level is largely unknown. Here, we unraveled spatial distribution and high-resolution density of apiaries and bacterial honey...
