Origin of the Stephanian Red Beds in the Ocejo Basin (Prov. of Leon, Spain) Naturalis

In the valley of Ocejo (prov. León) a series of alternating conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, and shales with a red colour are found. This series is 180 m thick, of Stephanian B + C age, and at present dips ± 30°W. Sedimentological analysis gives the following data: (1) quartz is the dominant detrital mineral, hematite and clay form the cement; (2) the components of the conglomerates are chiefly limestones of cobble size, the fine-grained sediments and matrices being chiefly siltstones with varying admixtures of clay size material; (3) the limestone pebbles have low roundness- and flatness-index values. The sediment was deposited by torrents at the foot of a rising mountain area. The source region had a thick cover of red soil on top of limestones....

Sedimentological aspects of four Lower-Paleozoic formations in the northern part of the province of León (Spain) Naturalis

This paper deals with the sedimentary structures and sedimentary petrography of the four lowermost formations of the Paleozoic as developed in the Northern part of the Province of León (Cantabrian Mountains, Spain). Three of the four formations have a detrital character, and one consists of dolomites and limestones. Mineralogically, the detrital formations are mature. Consequently the differences are small, but diagnostic. The source rocks will have been non-sedimentary. The Herreria Sandstone Formation is the oldest formation. Only its upper 200 metres are described here. This part consists of medium-grained quartzites with intercalations of shales, coarse quartzites, and conglomeratic beds. Diagenetic replacement of Micas by Carbonates Naturalis

In the Ordovician sandstones of the Cantabrian Mountains a replacement of the micas by carbonate minerals could be observed. The absence of metamorphic minerals suggests a diagenetic replacement. This is supported by the finding of the same type of replacement in some undisturbed Pliocene sediments of an intramontane basin in the French Pyrenees. It seems that replacement can occur at any stage during diagenesis.

SÉDIMENTATION PLIOCÈNE ET QUATERNAIRE DANS LE CONFLENT, FOSSÉ INTRAMONTAGNEUX DANS LES PYRÉNÉ ES ORIENTALES Cette contribution contient quelques résultats d’études sédimentologiques sur les dépôts pliocènes at quaternaires remplissant le fossé qui traverse les Pyrénées orientales en direction oblique. Les données sédimentologiques pourront fournir quelques indications sur les conditions de dépôt et sur la provenance de ces assises, ainsi que sur le climat. Pour les couches rouges de Codalet, remplies de fragments de schiste, l’opinion de Bourcart selon laquelle elles ont été formées par des coulées boueuses, est confirmée.
