Chagas' disease and Duffy antigen/receptor for chemokine (DARC): a mini-review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oliveira,AP; Mattos,LC; Cavasini,CE.
Duffy gene (FY) codifies the transmembrane glycoprotein Duffy (gp-Fy) of 35 to 43 kDa which is moderately immunogenic. This glycoprotein is polymorphic, and constitutes the antigens of the Duffy histo-blood system which were designated receptors for chemokines and denominated DARC (Duffy antigen/receptor for chemokine). This receptor has an important role in the regulation of chemokine levels in the circulation, as it binds and adsorbs them on the surface of red cells as a reservoir. It plays a "sink" role, which can contribute to homeostasis by removing inflammatory chemokines from circulation as well as maintaining them in plasmatic levels. Chronic Chagas' cardiopathy (CCC) is the most frequent form of the disease. It is an inflammatory disease, in which...

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of Brazilian propolis essential oil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oliveira,AP; França,HS; Kuster,RM; Teixeira,LA; Rocha,LM.
The present study aimed at investigating the chemical composition of essential oil extracted from Brazilian propolis and the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermides, Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli to this substance. The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of propolis and examined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In addition, the agar diffusion method using filter paper disks was employed. Antibacterial activity was measured as equivalent diameters of inhibition zones (in millimeters) after incubation at 37º C for 24 hours. From the 26 identified constituents, β-caryophyllene (12.7%), acetophenone (12.3%) and β-farnesene (9.2%) were found to be major components. New components, namely...

Immunophenotypic characterization of patients with American cutaneous leishmaniasis prior to and after treatment in Pernambuco, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Almeida,AF; Castro,MCAB; Oliveira,AP; Souza,MA; Pereira,VRA.
Leishmania infections induce a specific activation of host immunological response, particularly characterized by T cell expansion. Studies indicate the importance of the balance between CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, in which the first ones would have their number reduced during the healing process. Meanwhile, CD25+ T cells have been associated with the suppression of the immune response. Since the immune response has an essential role in both healing and progression of diseases, this study aimed to identify the percentage of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+ and CD25+ T cells in the peripheral blood of patients afflicted with American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) - before and after treatment - and healthy controls. Peripheral blood was collected and transferred to...
