Intercropping maize and cowpea cultivars: I. Green-grain yield Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Marcos Antônio Leite da; Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lima e; Oliveira,Vianney Reinaldo de; Sousa,Roberto Pequeno de; Silva,Paulo Igor Barbosa e.
ABSTRACT Green ears of maize are much appreciated all over Brazil and reach higher prices than dry grain. This also occurs with green cowpea grain, which is much appreciated in the north and northeast of the country. The aim of this study was to identify maize and cowpea cultivars that can be grown as monocrops or intercrops to produce green grain in the state of Pará (PA). An experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with six replications in Marabá, PA. Monocrops of traditional varieties of the cowpea (‘Corujinha’ and ‘Sempre Verde’) and the maize cultivars (‘AG 1051’ and ‘AL Bandeirante’), and four alternating, intercropped rows of a combination of the varieties and cultivars were evaluated. The ‘AG 1051’ cultivar was more productive than...

Intercropping maize and cowpea cultivars: II. Dry grain yield Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Marcos Antônio Leite da; Lima e Silva,Paulo Sérgio; Oliveira,Vianney Reinaldo de; Sousa,Roberto Pequeno de; Silva,Jaeveson da.
ABSTRACT There is interest in identifying the best maize and cowpea cultivars to be used in monocropped and intercropping systems for the production of dry grain. In order to meet this interest, two monocrops of cowpea (the traditional varieties, Corujinha and Sempre Verde) were evaluated with two monocrops of maize (the AG 1051 double hybrid and the AL Bandeirante variety) and four intercrops (combinations of the cowpea varieties and the maize cultivars). Under the intercropping systems, the maize and cowpea occupied alternating rows. A completely randomized block design with six replications was used. Grain growth and yield were higher in the AG 1051 hybrid than in the AL Bandeirante variety in both the monocropped and intercropping systems. For...

Effects of ground cover from branches of arboreal species on weed growth and maize yield Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lima e; Oliveira,Vianney Reinaldo de; Silva,Paulo Igor Barbosa e; Chicas,Larissa da Silva; Tomaz,Francisco Linco de Souza.
ABSTRACTCultivating maize under systems of alley cropping results in improvements to the soil, a reduction in weeds and an increase in yield. Studies using ground cover from tree shoots produce similar results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects on weed growth and maize yield of ground cover made up of 30 t ha-1 (fresh matter) of branches from the tree species: neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss), gliricidia [Gliricidia sepium(Jacq.) Kunth ex Walp.], leucaena [Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit.] and sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.). Two treatment groups (cultivars and weed control) were evaluated. The cultivars AG 1041 and AL Bandeirantes were subjected to the following treatments: no hoeing, double hoeing, and ground a cover of...

Branches of Gliricidia sepium used as mulch for weed control in corn Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Santos,Luiz Eduardo Barreto dos; Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lima e; Oliveira,Vianney Reinaldo de; Oliveira,Antonia Kennia de.
ABSTRACT Mulching using crop residue reduces the growth of weeds and increases the yield of various crops. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of Gliricidia sepium branches, used as mulch, on weed control, and on grain yield in corn. A randomized block design was used, with split plots and five replications. The cultivars, 30F35H and AG 1051, were grown in the plots, and the following treatments applied in the subplots: no weeding, two weedings, and mulching with 10, 20 or 30 t ha-1 (fresh weight) gliricidia branches. The mulch material was applied between the sowing furrows after sowing the corn. Increasing the amount of gliricidia branches caused a linear reduction in weed growth, and increased growth and yield in the corn. Weed...

Gliricidia sepium intercropping for weed management in immature corn ear production Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Tavella,Leonardo Barreto; Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lima e; Monteiro,Alex Lima; Oliveira,Vianney Reinaldo de; Fernandes,Patricia Liany de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT The goal of the study was to test the effects of combined weeding and gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) intercropping for weed control in baby corn and green corn production. A completely randomized block design was employed, with split-plot and four replicates. Hybrids AG 1051 and BR 205 were subjected to the following treatments: A = two hoeings, 20 and 40 days after sowing (DAS); B = hoeing at 20 DAS + gliricidia intercropping following weeding; C = gliricidia intercropping established at the moment of corn sowing (GICS) + hoeing at 40 DAS; D = GICS; E = no weeding. Gliricidia was broadcast sown with 30 viable seeds m-2. The best treatments follow the order A > B > C as number of ears, fresh mass of ears with husks, fresh and dry masses of...
