Morphometric Investigation of the Brainof West African Dwarf Sheep in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Olopade,James Olukayode; Onwuka,Silas Kalu; Balogun,Babatunde Abiodun; Oke,Bankole Olusiji.
Morphometric studies were carried out on the brains of twenty West African Dwarf (WAD) sheep using frozen unfixed specimen. The mean brain weight was 69.14g, while the mean brain length and depth were 7.48cm and 4.17cm, respectively. The mean length of the cerebrum and cerebellum were 5.08cm and 2.27cm, respectively. The relative brain weight was 0.08% while the relative weight of the head was 0.8%. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the weight of head, weight of brain, brain length and depth and in the relative brain weight of animals weighing 10kg and above, compared with those below this weight mark. The values of the first four parameters were higher while the fifth was lower. Animals aged one year and above, had significantly heavier...

MORPHOMETRIC STUDIES OF THE CRANIO-FACIAL REGION OF THE WEST AFRICAN DWARF GOAT IN NIGERIA International Journal of Morphology
Olopade,James Olukayode; Onwuka,Silas Kalu.
This study involved the measurement of some parameters in the craniofacial region of the West African Dwarf Goat (WADG). The mean weight of the head was 0.74kg. The length of the rima oris and space between the median canthi were 8.69cm ad 8.81 cm respectively. The right palpebral fissure and external nare were longer than the left. The eyeball weight was 6.87g; the left eyeball was heavier than the right. Females had significantly heavier heads and body weights than the males. The right palpebral fissure was longer than the left in females but the reverse was the case in males. These findings will serve as baseline information in the study of the head of WADG and in comparative anatomy with other breeds

Caudofrontal Depression on the Cornual End of the Temporal Line of the Skull of Goat Breeds in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Olopade,James Olukayode; Onwuka,Silas Kalu; Kwari,Hyelduku Danladi; Oke,Bankole Olusiji.
A comparative study of skull types was done using 65 skulls obtained from three different goat breeds in Nigeria namely; Red Sokoto, Sahel and West African Dwarf. A unique depression was consistently found at the cornual end of the temporal line of the skull medial to the middle portion of the caudal boundary of the orbit and dorsal to the lateral portion of the parietofrontal suture. The depression was found in all the breeds studied, and in both sexes on the lateral sides of both cornual processes of the frontal bones. The features (depth, height and width) of the depression were found to vary without regard to either sex or breed. A search of the literature did not yield any information on this depression in the skull of the goat. Consequently, we...

Some Aspects of the Clinical Anatomy of the Mandibular and Maxillofacial Regions of the West African Dwarf Goat in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Olopade,James Olukayode; Onwuka,Silas Kalu.
Some measurements in the mandibles and upper jaws of thirty West African Dwarf (WAD) goats without any apparent skeletal disorders were analysed. The length and height of the mandibles were 12.00 cm and 6.90 cm, respectively. The distance from the lateral alveolar root to the mental foramen, from the mental foramen to the caudal mandibular border were 1.56cm, 9.96cm, and 2.58cm respectively. The width and height of the mental foramen were 0.5 cm and 0.3 cm, respectively. These data are discussed with regard to their application to clinical manoeuvres around the head of the goat such as regional anesthesia during dental extraction
