On Aestrelata aterrima (Bonaparte) Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Last year Mr. P. Buitendijk had the good fortune to obtain again an example of Aestrelata aterrima (Bonaparte), caught aboard ship at night in the Indian Ocean (lat. 10°52'N., long 60°8' E.) at December 11th 1911. This is the second example presented by him to our collection (cf. Notes Leyden Mus. XXXIII, 1910—’11, p. 113). It is a female in worn plumage, moulting wing- and tailfeathers, and having no whitish feathers on the lores and on the head like the first specimen. Mr. Buitendijk has noted the colour of the light parts of the feet in the live bird dull white; that of iris and bill black. I received the bird in rather fresh condition, as it had been preserved in the refrigerating-room of the steamer; the colour of the light parts of the feet was then...

On a new species of Chalcopsitta from N. W. New Guinea Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
This magnificent new species of the genus Chalcopsitta, which I describe here under the name of Chalcopsitta spectabilis, nov. sp. is nearly allied to Chalcopsitta insignis Oustalet; it differs however in many respects from this species and shows at the same time some relation to Chalcopsitta scintillatus (Temminck). Forehead, lores and upper parts of the cheeks red; head and neck black; lower cheeks and throat black with a red tinge; elongated feathers of the hind neck and upper back purplish black with greenish yellow shaftstreaks; back and wings dark greenish brown, the smaller wingcoverts with dark edges, near the bend of the wing the feathers violet; rump bright blue; upper tailcoverts dark green; tailfeathers above olive-green with violet tips,...

On some birds observed in the Netherlands Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Among the birds and the eggs from the Netherlands received by 's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1930 there are some ones of special interest, which I mention in the following lines: Daption capense (Linnaeus). Some days ago I received from Mr. J. J. TER PELKWIJK at the Hague the imperfect skull of a petrel, that has been found by Mr. S. BAKKER at the Hague between half August and half September 1930 on the shore of Hoek van Holland north of the Noorderpier. Comparing the skull with skeletons in our collection, I found that it belongs to the Cape Petrel, Daption capense (L.). This is the second time that this species is recorded from the Netherlands, for in the beginning of last century a specimen of the Cape Petrel has been found dead near...

Eudynamis Minima, an apparently new Cuckoo from Southwestern New Guinea Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Only an adult male of this apparently new form of the genus Eudynamis has been collected near Bivak Island, in the Noord River, Southwestern New Guinea, at 9 January 1910 by the members of the last Lorentz-expedition to the snowy mountains. (Coll. Lorentz n°. 508). The plumage is black, glossed with greenish blue. Iris fire-red; bill dull yellow with blackish base; feet black. The dimensions are very small, smaller than those of any of the described forms of Eudynamis, even inferior to those of Eudynamis orientalis alberti Rothschild & Hartert of the Solomon Islands, which has a length of wing from 180—185 mm. (Nov. Zool. XIV, 1907, p. 440). Our specimen measures: culmen 23, wing 169, tail 164, tarso-met. 30 mm.

Report on Birds from the Netherlands received from 1 September 1908 till 1 September 1909 Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
In my paper oil the Avifauna of the Netherlands, which I published in the preceding volume of this periodical, I gave a list of all the species observed in our country and an account of the most interesting specimens in the collection of our Museum, with the number of the specimens of each species received during the last years. In those four years, from 1 September 1904 till 1 September 1908, the collection of indigenous birds has been enlarged with about 1900 skins, by donation as well as by purchase. In the academical year from 1 September 1908 till 1 September 1909 this collection has been augmented again with about 675 skins, among which are three specimens belonging to two species, Megalestris skua and Serinus serinus, which were not represented in...

On the Catalogue of the collection of Birds brought together by A. Vroeg Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
In the library of the Royal Zoological Society »Natura Artis Magistra” at Amsterdam, there is a copy of the descriptive catalogue of the collection of birds etc. made by Mr. A. Vroeg and sold at the Hague in the year 1764. This is one of the rarest prints, besides this only one copy, preserved in the library of the Linnean Society of London, is known. The attention of Zoologists to this Catalogue has been drawn by Mr. C. D. Sherborn, when writing his Index Animalium, and the new names in the catalogue were attributed by Mr. Sherborn in his Index to A. Vroeg; but afterwards he was informed by Dr. C. W. Richmond, that P. S. Pallas was the author of the new names in the »adumbratiunculae” at the end of the catalogue (cf. Smithsonian Misc. Coll. XLVII, 1905,...

On a new Bird of Paradise Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Mr. Th. H. Ruys, who stayed during four years for commercial purposes at the north-west coast of New Guinea, presented at his return in Holland to our Museum some skins of birds of paradise, among which is, besides the rare Diphyllodes gulielmi III, also a species, being as I believe new to science. I cannot place it in any of the described genera of the Paradiseida ; it shows some relations to Diphyllodes and also to Paradisea, but as there are important differences with these two genera, I propose to call it: Neoparadisea ruysi, nov. gen. et nov. spec. The bird seems to be a male in not fully developed plumage. The tail is, like that of Paradisea, composed of 12 feathers, of which the central pair is much elongated, like in P. apoda and minor, but the...

Bird-marking in the Netherlands. III. Recovery of marked Birds Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
In the following lines I have enumerated the recoveries of our marked birds, of which notice was given to me since my last paper on bird-marking in vol. XXXIV of this periodical. I have to tender my best thanks to all cooperators, to them who helped us in ringing birds, and especially to them in foreign countries, who sent us informations about capture of our ring-birds.

Bird-marking in the Netherlands Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Since May of this year the Museum of Natural History at Leyden is carrying into execution the inquiry into migration and other movements of birds in the Netherlands by means of aluminium rings. The results will be published in this periodical and at the same time in Dutch in the periodical of the „Nederlandsche Ornithologische Vereeniging”. It is not necessary to give here particulars about our method of working or about the rings used, only I will remark that our rings are of ten sizes. The smaller rings are marked MUSEUM the larger ones MUSEUM NAT. HIST., all of course also LEIDEN LEIDEN—HOLLAND numbered. Since May more than 2500 rings have been sent to 40 persons, willing to co-operate at the scheme for marking birds in our country. As far as I can see...

On Arachnotheria longirostra (Latham) Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
The typical habitat of Arachnothera longirostra (Latham) — Ind. Orn. I, 1790, p. 299, Certhia longirostra — is Bengal. This form is spread over an extensive area, but specimens of some of the Malay islands show differences with those of the continent of Asia. How far away from Bengal the typical form is found, I am not able to say with full certainty, as the material I have at my disposal from the continent and also from Sumatra is very poor, but it seems to me that examples from the continent, from the Malay Peninsula, from the Riouw-Lingga Archipelago, from Sumatra, Banka and Billiton belong to one and the same form. As said, my material from these parts however is very poor. In the Leyden Museum there are 1 specimen from Tenasserim, 5 specimens from...

Bird-marking in the Netherlands. II. Recovery of marked Birds Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
In addition to my first paper on this subject on page 55 of the present volume, I give here an enumeration of recoveries of birds, marked on account of the Leyden Museum in 1911 as well as in 1912. The number of the birds marked in 1912 is considerably surpassing that of them marked in 1911. I cannot give now the exact number of marked birds nor a complete list of the species, as many of our cooperators did not yet sent to me the filled-in schedules.

Report on Birds from the Netherlands received from 1 September 1909 till 1 September 1910 Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
During the last twelve months our collection of indigenous birds has been augmented by 516 skins and about 65 clutches of eggs. Among the skins are two specimens of the black guillemot Cepphus grylle) a species, which was not yet represented in our collection. Of another species, also not represented in the collection and even new to the Avifauna of the Netherlands, which I have mentioned in a previous note in this volume 1), I had the good fortune to purchase a stuffed example, that has been shot some time ago in our country. Of three species, Colymbus imber, Egatheus falcinellus and Motacilla flava thunbergi, which belong to our rare visitants, I received this year examples, of the lastnamed species several ones. The following gentlemen presented the...

Report on a small collection of Birds from Merauke, southern New Guinea Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Some time ago Dr. J. C. Koningsberger of Buitenzorg forwarded me for determination a part of the collection of birdskins made by the Dutch detachment of exploration in the neighbourhood of Merauke between June 1907 and March 1908. The skins are not dated, but only sexed; the collection contains however interesting specimens. I give here, in addition to my paper in Nova Guinea, Vol. IX, p. 51, a list of the examples, which are in my hands. I am very sorry, that they form only the smaller half of the collection, the larger part is still in the Buitenzorg Museum and most unfortunately the skins have already been stuffed, though they have not been determined by a competent person. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort, when being at Buitenzorg in November 1909, has seen the...

Contribution to our knowledge of the Avifauna of the Netherlands, being a list of all the species of birds hitherto observed, with special references to specimens in the Leyden Museum Naturalis
Oort, E.D. van.
Though the specimens in our general ornithological collection, for the greater part collected before and at the time that the late Professor H. Schlegel interested himself much in the knowledge of the birds of the Netherlands — that is before 1865 —, in addition with those of the fine collection of stuffed birds, brought together by the late Mr. J. P. van Wickevoort Crommelin, all captured in the Netherlands and received by the Museum in 1893, form for many of the species a scientific material, I however acquired the experience, when taking the care of the Birds-collection of our Museum in 1904, that many other species, even some of the commonest ones, were represented in an insufficient manner, so that it was impossible to make a somewhat serious study...
