Livestock farmers’ attitude towards manure separation technology as future strategy AgEcon
Gebrezgabher, Solomie A.; Lanker, Dora; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
In this paper, an ordered probit model is used to assess the factors that affect the probability of livestock farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology in the future. A survey, based on a postal and computerized questionnaire of representative dairy and pig farms in the Netherlands was carried out in 2009. The results show that age of farmer and a variable which accounts for the interaction between size and location of the farm are important variables explaining the probability of farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology. Furthermore, farmers who agreed that future application norms are the driving force for considering adoption of manure separation technology were more likely to consider manure separation as the right...

An Examination of the Relationship Between Subsidies on Production and Technical Efficiency in Agriculture: The Case of Cotton Producers in Greece AgEcon
Emvalomatis, Grigorios; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Stefanou, Spiro E..
Subsidies on production have long been criticized for protecting producers from competition, and thus removing an incentive for efficient use of the resources. This study undertakes the examination of the impact of partially decoupled subsidies on the technical efficiency scores of cotton producers in Greece. The results indicate that compensatory area payments reduce the efficiency scores of the producers by diverting resources from products for which the subsidy is based on the area planted to the production of cotton, for which the aid is related to the volume of output.

Dynamic Decomposition of Total Factor Productivity Change in the EU Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Industry: The Effect of R&D AgEcon
Emvalomatis, Grigorios; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
The main objective of this paper is to generate measures of TFP change for the food, beverages, and tobacco industry in the EU. Explicitly taking into account the fact that some of the inputs used in the industry are fixed in the short run, the generated measures of TFP change reflects the dynamic nature of the problem. The second objective is to analyse TFP change into its components and explicitly examine the effect of Research and Development (R&D) effort on TFP growth. Data are collected from EU KLEMS and the OECD Structural Analysis database. The data contain country-level information on output volume, input prices and capital stock, as well as R&D expenditure for the food, beverages, and tobacco industry for the 15 “old” EU Member States....

Dynamic adjustments in the Dutch greenhouse sector due to environmental regulations AgEcon
Verreth, Daphne M.I.; Emvalomatis, Grigorios; Bunte, Frank H.J.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
Horticultural firms are dependent on energy to produce, while policy makers focus on reducing the use of energy and investment in energy-saving technologies. The paper aimed to asses Dutch greenhouse farmers‘ responses to policies that would affect prices of different energy inputs. The farmer’s behaviour is modelled in two steps: firms are assumed to maximize profit at given energy use level, and firms are assumed to minimize the discounted sum of energy costs. The model is estimated using farm survey data spanning the period 2001-2008. Short-run and long-run elasticities with respect to prices and investments in energy-using technology are estimated. The greenhouse sector shows a fast adjustment of energy capital towards its long-run equilibrium. This...

Analysing Profits and Economic Behaviour of Organic and Conventional Dutch Arable Farms AgEcon
Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Jensma, Klaske.
This paper uses a micro-econometric model to analyse differences in variable profits and economic behaviour between organic and conventional arable farms. Insight in factors underlying these differences is essential in designing policy measures that aim at encouraging the transition to a more sustainable farming practice. The framework is applied to a rotating panel of Dutch conventional and organic arable farms over the period 1990-1999. The results show that the, on average larger variable profit of organic farms is mainly associated with the use of land and technological changes. The shadow price of labour suggests over-use of labour on organic arable farms. Demand for pesticides and supply of output are generally more elastic on organic farms....

LIQUIDITY AND PRODUCTIVITY IN RUSSIAN AGRICULTURE: FARM-DATA EVIDENCE AgEcon
Bezlepkina, Irina V.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
The Russian agricultural sector has experienced many problems since the beginning of the 1990s that resulted in a fall in farm output. Employing a production function approach and, unlike other studies, farm-level data on more than 20,000 Russian large-scale farms for the period 1995-2000, this study analyzes the impact of both production (land, labour, capital, materials) and financial (debts and budget transfers) determinants on the productivity. Inter-regional differences such as weather conditions and farm-specific features such as geographical location, management and soil quality are taken into account employing the fixed-effect estimation. The findings show that Russian farms operate under liquidity constraints that lower their productivity.

Learning in Organic Farming – An Application on Finnish Dairy Farms AgEcon
Sipilainen, Timo; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
Organic farming technology may be relatively unknown to farmers at the time when they switch from conventional into organic farming. Therefore, experience gained over time and learning by doing may be important determinants in the efficiency of organic farming. It may also take time to reach the optimal nutrient stock of soil and optimal nutrient supply for arable crops under organic farming. Thus, efficiency of organic farming can either grow or decrease over time depending on the nature of the technology and the learning process. This paper estimates technical efficiency of organic farming and its development over time. We control for possible selection bias and regional heterogeneity when estimating a stochastic frontier distance functions for a sample...

DYNAMIC MICROECONOMETRIC APPROACHES TO ANALYSING AGRICULTURAL POLICY AgEcon
Gardebroek, Cornelis; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
Micro-econometric models have become a standard and powerful tool in analysing agricultural policies. In this paper we assess the contributions that have been made in the agricultural economics literature to dynamic microeconometric models of firms and households that are estimated using microdata. After discussing developments in dynamic investment models, dynamic household models, dynamic discrete choice models and dynamic efficiency models we give promising directions for future research and discuss implications for future data collection.

Testing a Performance Measurement Framework for Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Aramyan, Lusine H.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; van Kooten, Olaf.
Measurement of entire supply chain performance is an important issue, because it allows for "tracking and tracing" of efficacy and efficiency failures and leads to more informed decision-making with regards to chain organization. The ultimate aim of implementing a performance measurement system is to improve the performance of the organization. If supply chains can get their performance measurement right, the data they generate will tell them where they are, how they are doing, and where they are going. The choice of appropriate supply chain performance indicators is rather complicated due to presence of multiple inputs and multiple outputs in the system. This issue becomes even more problematic in the field of food and agribusiness due to specific...

Technical Efficiency of the Crop Farms under the Various CAP Reforms: Empirical Studies for Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden AgEcon
Zhu, Xueqin; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
We analyse the impacts of the CAP reforms on the technical efficiency of the crop farms. We use an output distance function and an inefficiency effects model which incorporates the influences of exogenous variables on farm efficiency. We formulate policy variables (e.g. the CAP subsidies) and producer characteristics as explanatory variables in the inefficiency effects model. We use the 1995- 2004 FADN data to estimate the production frontiers of the crop farms in Germany, Netherlands and Sweden, to derive their technical efficiency, and to determine the effects of the explanatory variables. The study shows that the 10-year average technical efficiency of crop farms is 59% in Germany, 75% in Netherlands, and 70% in Sweden. The average annual technical...

FARM HETEROGENEITY IN WILDLIFE PRODUCTION AgEcon
van Wenum, Jaap; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Wossink, Ada.
The paper discusses the appropriate functional form and estimation technique for a wildlife production function on the farm level. A random effect model was developed to capture the relationship between wildlife output, management practices, natural conditions and non-observed factors that cause a farm specific management bias. Two wildlife measures were compared: species richness and a wildlife yardstick that enables different species to be weighed on their ecological value. The results show that the farm specific factor has a significant impact on the production of wildlife both in terms of species numbers and in terms of ecological values. Parameter estimates that were similar for the species richness specification were found to vary with the yardstick...

Multi-criteria assessment of ethical aspects in fresh tomato systems: Plant genomics technology innovation and food policy uses AgEcon
Michalopoulos, T.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Heuvelink, E.; Hogeveen, Henk.
Product assessment for imperceptible characteristics like environmental impact, healthfulness, naturalness, and fairness is a helpful tool in product innovation and for enhancing socially responsible conduct. In this study we apply multiple criteria analysis for the assessment of fresh tomatoes in terms of consumer perceptions regarding the above characteristics. The generated indices provide an explicit and comprehensive representation of consumer perceptions. Existing tomato products from the Dutch market are ranked alongside (reasonable conjectures of) potential products to be developed with the use of plant genomics technology. The results are interpreted to provide insights into the socially optimal use of (plant genomics) technology for fresh tomato...

Measurement of dynamic efficiency, a directional distance function parametric approach AgEcon
Serra, Teresa; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
This research proposes a parametric estimation of the structural dynamic efficiency measures proposed by Silva and Oude Lansink (2009). Overall, technical and allocative efficiency measurements are derived based on a directional distance function and the duality between this function and the optimal value function. The applicability of the parametric proposal is illustrated by assessing dynamic efficiency ratings for a sample of Dutch dairy farms observed from 1995 to 2005.

Do Farmers Internalise External Impacts of Pesticides in Production? AgEcon
Skevas, Theodoros; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
In modern agriculture, pesticides feature so prominently in growers’ arsenal to reduce crop damage caused by various pests and diseases. But their indiscriminate use can harm human health and the environment and, eventually, impact agricultural productivity negatively. In an era of an increasing public awareness on the external effects of pesticides, the EU is trying to update its pesticide policy by establishing tax and levy schemes. An important question is whether the external impacts of pesticides are also affecting the farmers’ production environment. A damage abatement specification is used consisting of a potential output function and a damage abatement function. The damage abatement function considers both high and low toxicity pesticides, and...
