This study presents some results of monitoring the beaches at East of Havana City, Cuba, during February and August corresponding to the rainy and less rainy seasons, respectively. For the bacteriological analysis were carried out 5 samplings in a period of 30 days, the rest of the samples was collected as punctual samples. The results are compared with those obtained in other samplings, specifically with 2004 period and with the requirements in the Cuban Standard NC: 22, (1999). Practically, the whole area showed pollution indicators deteriorated, such as: the permanganate oxidability value, bacteriological indicators and hydrocarbons, the last one corresponds to a lightly polluted area by hydrocarbons. The most affected areas were the outlet of the... |

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 175, 40 holes were drilled at 13 sites, and 8003 m were recovered with the aim of reconstructing the late Neogene history of the Angola-Benguela upwelling system on the southwest African margin. This system is one of the great upwelling regions of the world and is characterized by organic-rich sediments that provide an excellent record of productivity back to the middle Miocene. Understanding the sedimentology and stratigraphy of these sediments will provide important new information on the paleoceanography of this region, including the complex role the ocean plays in global carbon cycling and climate change. This contribution summarizes the sedimentologic and stratigraphic data compiled on board the JOIDES Resolution... |

Patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti) is one of the predominant cartilaginous fishes of the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic Ocean). It is caught, mainly, in the coastal multispecific fishery with nearly other 30 bony and cartilaginous species. The group is known as ‘variado costero’. In this work the smoothhound abundance indices (CPUE) and standardized efforts for the 1992-2008 period in the area between 34~’S-42~’S were estimated. The General Lineal Model (GLM) and data derived from the argentine commercial fleet were used. Other aspects that could affect estimates and trends of the annual indices were also analyzed. Mean CPUE values estimated with the GLM, considered as annual standardized abundance indices, show an increasing trend as of 2000; the... |

The activity of fishing fleets for hake Merluccius hubbsi south of 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic, is described. In order to establish the standard group of vessels, density indices derived from research cruises and ice-chilling fleets were related. Group four 1,400-1,800 HP related better to the abundance trend. Also, two series of indices associated to different fractions of the population were estimated: juveniles age 2) and adults age 3-5. Finally, a total catch per unit effort CPUE for the region south of 41°S, which showed a declining trend during the period considered 1991-1997, was calculated. |

Precision of abundance index estimation Merluccius hubbsi is directly related with the variability that normally occurs during the fishing operation and consequently in the geometry of the net duringeach haul. Some of these factors can be controlled, therefore the standardization of the sampling methodology avoids differences in the behaviour and 'work' of the net minimizing variations in the catchability between hauls. The acoustic equipment (SCANMAR) in there search vessels, allows to monitore the fishing operation during the trawl and to develop strategies in order to reduce the variability and to improve the precision of the estimations. The applicability of the methodology and there for the validity of the estimates indifferent cruises must be studied... |

The present study was carried out to define a practical method to use in the shrimps farmers to minimize the dumps of Sodium Metabisulfite solution (MBS, in Spanish) used in the chemical treatment of shrimp cultured Litopenaeus vannamei during the crop, to the environment, reactivating the used solutions. Tests with different solutions of MBS to different concentrations were carried out, and variations of concentrations in 1% were determinated by means of a salinometer. Chart was elaborated with the reactivations dosages of the solutions keeping in mind the purity of chemical agent employed. |

At present, there is a worldwide tendency to discover new drugs that provide an answer to treat different illnesses, many of them still without solution and others of difficult treatment. In the last two decades, diverse groups of scientists have concentrated on obtaining natural marine compounds, since they represent a source of new chemical structures. Marine pharmacology has focused its attention on some areas of pharmaceutical development with emphasis on cancer and on inflammatory illnesses. In this work we carry out the study of two extracts from sponges of the Cuban shelf as possible sources of anti-inflammatory and/or analgesic compounds. To achieve this objective the extracts were evaluated in the models of inhibition of phospholipase A2 of bee... |
