Assessment of the origin of microbiological contamination of groundwater at a rural watershed in Chile Agrociencia
Valenzuela,Mariela; Mondaca,María A.; Claret,Marcelino; Pérez,Claudio; Lagos,Bernardo; Parra,Oscar.
In a rural watershed in Chile, the scarce groundwater available represents almost the only water source both for agriculture and domestic use. This water has microbiological quality problems, which result in an agricultural and local economic development constraint. Contamination can come from punctual or diffuse sources. Characterizing the microbiological quality of groundwater allows both to identify sources from the point of view of whether they are point or non point -thus facilitating their reduction or elimination- and to determine health hazards likely to affect the population in the area under study. This study aimed to improve the state of knowledge on the microbiological quality of groundwater at a rural watershed. Forty two wells were seasonally...

Progress in tear microdesiccate analysis by combining various transmitted-light microscope techniques Biol. Res.
Traipe-Salas,Felipe; Traipe-Castro,Leonidas; Salinas-Toro,Daniela; López,Daniela; Valenzuela,Felipe; Cartes,Christian; Toledo-Araya,Héctor; Pérez,Claudio; Solís,Remigio López.
BACKGROUND: Tear desiccation on a glass surface followed by transmitted-light microscopy has served as diagnostic test for dry eye. Four distinctive morphological domains (zones I, II, III and transition band) have been recently recognized in tear microdesiccates. Physicochemical dissimilarities among those domains hamper comprehensive microscopic examination of tear microdesiccates. Optimal observation conditions of entire tear microdesiccates are now investigated. One-μ! aliquots of tear collected from individual healthy eyes were dried at ambient conditions on microscope slides. Tear microdesiccates were examined by combining low-magnification objective lenses with transmitted-light microscopy (brightfield, phase contrasts Ph1,2,3 and...

Fecal Contamination of Groundwater in a Small Rural Dryland Watershed in Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Valenzuela,Mariela; Lagos,Bernardo; Claret,Marcelino; Mondaca,María A; Pérez,Claudio; Parra,Oscar.
Research on microbiological groundwater quality was conducted in Chile in a rural watershed that has almost no other water source. Forty-two wells were randomly selected and levels of indicator bacteria - total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), and fecal streptococci (FS) - were repeatedly measured during the four seasons of 2005. The aim of this study was to characterize microbiological groundwater quality, relate indicator levels to certain watershed features and management characteristics which are likely to affect water quality. The dynamics of seasonal temporal contamination was determined with statistical analyses of indicator organism concentrations. Nonparametric tests were used to analyze relationships between bacterial indicators in well...
